Trains, planes and Small Business week…
This week is Small Business Week according to the SBA and I am celebrating all of the entrepreneurs that I’ve had the privilege to meet.
Last Sunday, I poured as part of Pour Oregon where 40 small wineries from around the state poured over 20 different varietals. It was a celebration of the diversity that the Oregon wine industry has to offer, presented by local artisan producers. The event was created by another small business, Cellar 503, a local wine retailer that supports “the small guy”.
This week, I visited my new distributor in Wisconsin. They have, I think, 8 employees to cover the state, and specialize in offering wines from small producers. Wednesday night, I got to pour my wines at the new store opening of Waterford Wines in Delafield. The buyer, Ben Christiansen, came to visit me in Portland and loved the wines so he connected me with Select Sellars so that the wines could be sold in WI. Waterford Wines is a small retailer in Milwaukee (and now Delafield) that champions small producers.
And yesterday, I was in Chicago (hence the gorgeous view from the Willis Tower) visiting accounts with the reps from H2Vino.
There are times, sometimes often, when running a small business is a pain in the rear. There is no IT person when your computer decides it doesn’t like you any more. There is no one but your sweet self to unload and stack those 20 cases of wine that you just picked up in the back of your car, even though it’s late in the day and you should have started making dinner for the kids an hour ago. There are weeks when your employee got paid and you didn’t, despite the hours that you put in.
But… I wouldn’t have it any other way. I honestly don’t think I could be employed by someone else at this point if I did change my mind any way.
So… I’ll raise a glass to my compadres and to all small businesses, and ask you to shop local to support them. They’re the ones trying out new varietals and techniques and bringing you awesome from producers you’ve never heard of.
Lastly..I have a bunch of events coming up this month: Portland Urban Wineries Experience tomorrow and a Winemaker Dinner at Quaintrelle, which will include some library wine. Check below for details.
