COME HAVE SOME WINE
Open Today 2pm – 7pm
On January 20, 1993, Bill Clinton was inaugurated into the office of the President of the United States and had this to say during his speech that day:
“Our Founders saw themselves in the light of posterity. We can do no less. Anyone who has ever watched a child’s eyes wander into sleep knows what posterity is. Posterity is the world to come: the world for whom we hold our ideals, from whom we have borrowed our planet, and to whom we bear sacred responsibility. We must do what America does best: offer more opportunity to all and demand more responsibility from all. It is time to break the bad habit of expecting something for nothing from our Government or from each other. Let us all take more responsibility not only for ourselves and our families but for our communities and our country.”
On January 20, 2009, our country inaugurated its first African American President with Barack Obama and hope was alive in America and I think many of us were thinking “Yes We Can”.
Today, we start a new chapter. It’s hard to know what the future holds, but we must all keep in mind the things that are important to us and make sure we speak up about what you are passionate about every day. With purpose. And support those around you who share your vision, so together as one we can put this part of American history behind us and hope it ends in a way that is far better than you might fear it will right now.
With the heavy occasion of this time-honored day landing on the same day I reopen the shop since the holidays, following weeks and weeks of paralyzing Winter weather, this is as direct as I will ever be about our small business and its need for you to come and support us. That includes not just Viola Wine Cellars, but also your favorite restaurants, those small specialty food shops you might only visit once or twice a year, the boutique where you’ve been eyeing an outfit but putting off a purchase. These are trying times for all small businesses in Portland and we need your help. Rise with us and let’s make the future bright for all of those you care about.
Please join me anytime this afternoon for a flight of wine, a few bottles to share with friends and family, or several cases to restock the coffers that are likely bare after so much time spent home awaiting the ice to melt. I’m here for you and look forward to greeting you today and in the weeks and months to come.
Wishing you all peace and love, and looking forward to seeing many familiar faces when we march tomorrow for Women, for Race, for Immigrants, for Human Rights, for the Arts, and for all that is important to each of you.
