2018 at Kookoolan Farms
Kookoolan Farms was established October 17, 2005, now in our fourteenth year of farming! If you’ve just recently found us, welcome! If you’ve been with us for a long time, thank you! — and we hope you’ve enjoyed watching us evolve over the years. If you haven’t seen us at the farmer’s market and wonder how we’re doing — the answer is: better than ever! (Check out our feature story in the Spring 2018 issue of Take Root Magazine, page 18) We have reinvented our little farm several times; adding new enterprises; discontinuing others; rebalancing the proportions and quantities of different things we grow to optimize the sustainability load on our land; to optimize the daily, weekly, and seasonal rhythms for our family and our workers; and occasionally to enable new hobbies, interests or ventures as those come up.
Once a year we like to send out an update to let you know what we’ll be doing this year. For three years now, we no longer come into town for any farmer’s markets or deliveries. Our products are not available in any stores or at any restaurants. We only sell direct to families just like yours! This has phenomenally improved our quality of life and enjoyment of farming, and we are grateful every day that customers like you make the drive out to Yamhill two or three times a year so that we no longer have to come to Portland two or three times a week.
Although we no longer come into town, we are very happy to offer two choices for picking up beef and lamb orders — may be picked up either from our farm in Yamhill or from our processor, The Meating Place, in Hillsboro.
All other items are available only at our unstaffed self-service honor store at our farm in Yamhill. We’re always happy to help when you come out to the farm. We just don’t stand around in the farm store waiting for people to help!
We specialize in 100% grass-fed beef and lamb; pasture-raised, organic-fed chickens; eggs from pastured hens; mead and kombucha. Farmer Chrissie is also an award-winning meadmaker, self-published author of the world’s first mead appreciation book, “The Art of Mead Tasting and Food Pairing,” and regular mead speaker and judge. Farmer Koorosh is also a master cabinetmaker and finish carpenter and hobby beekeeper.

Our 100%-organic-feed, free-range, hand-raised, hand-processed chickens have been a cult legend in Portland since 2007! There’s lots of information on our website, and lots of information and photos on Facebook. Available each year only June through October and they consistently sell out for the year before we receive our first chicks each spring. Our 2018 chickens are already completely sold out with a waitlist – we do still have very limited availability of hindquarters (thigh and drumstick), gizzards, and stock kits. Reserve early to avoid disappointment — we already have several reservations on the books for 2019. Remember: if you want a Kookoolan Farms chicken in the winter, the only place to find one is in your own freezer!
100% grass-fed lambs available by the whole, custom-butchered to your cutting instructions. Half lambs are available with our standard cuts packages. Seasonal product just available June through December each year, accepting reservations year round. There’s lots of information on our website, and lots of information on Facebook. $8.80/lb hanging weight price for half lambs; $8/55/lb for whole lambs, custom processed, all processing costs included. Season runs June-December; June and July 2018 are already sold out and we are reserving for August through December 2018.

“The Art of Mead Tasting and Food Pairing” was written by Farmer Chrissie and self-published by Chrissie and Koorosh, and is available on Amazon or directly from us. Wholesale inquiries for reselling the book at your business very welcome. This hefty book weighs three pounds: hardcover, 432 pages, 345 photos, 44 food recipes with mead pairings, 10 dessert recipes with pairings, 14 mead cocktail recipes, the world’s first mead appreciation and food pairing book, $49.95! This is also a cookbook of some of Farmer Chrissie’s favorite recipes for chicken, beef and lamb – the recipes are mostly hers, and she did all the cooking and food styling, and about two-thirds of the photography in the book. A terrific gift for the mead aficionado, homebrewer, foodie, or Kookoolan Farms groupie in your life.
“Elegance” Mead. Farmer Chrissie’s award-winning flagship traditional semisweet mead, 14.9% ABV, 5% residual sugars, made using a cold process, just from raw honey, propolis, bee pollen, beeswax, and royal jelly, and aged in French oak, $29. This wine is “soft” rather than “sweet”: it’s a semisweet wine that pairs beautifully with most chicken and fish dishes, Middle Eastern, Indian, Mexican, and Asian foods, or with a cheese plate. Enjoy slightly chilled like a velvety Chardonnay. 2014 and 2015 silver medal winner at the Mazer Cup International Mead Competition.
“Copper” Mead. This is a pyment: a style of mead made both from wine grapes and from honey; not wine sweetened wine honey, but rather a blend of oak-aged Pinot Noir wine from our own small vineyard plus Chrissie’s Elegance mead. 14.2% ABV, 2.4% residual sugar, this drinks like a semisweet rosé, and is terrific with grassfed beef and lamb. $29. 2018 bronze medal winner at Mazer Cup International Mead Competition: this is the third-rated pyment in the world!
VIN DE NOIX
We have Vin de Noix dessert wine available for $22/375ml. The ideal dessert wine, tastes a little like Port, and a lot like Christmas. Green walnut fruits are traditionally harvested on Bastille Day (mid-July) and steeped in a combination of red wine, mead and brandy, complemented by spices and sugar. Delish!
We have our Purity label kombucha, two flavors (rose petal-green tea, or Earl Grey black tea) for $3.50/bottle or $33/case of 12.
