We had an overwhelming response to our first Wine Finds offer, selling out of all items within 24 hours. So this time we have scoured for bottles that have a little more supply available so hopefully we can quench everyone’s thirst. But don’t delay ordering if you’re interested in getting some of these wines deliveries this week. Orders need to be placed by 3pm Tuesday (assuming we don’t sell out sooner) in order to get delivery this Thursday.
For our second Wine Finds discoveries, we venture to Central Italy and the storied land known as Toscana. This is where Chianti, Vino Nobile and Brunello are all from. Each of these wines and their younger Rosso siblings, are based on the Sangiovese grape, albeit some made with clones that have other names. From light, fresh and simple to intense, structured and tannic, Sangiovese can run the gamut of wine styles and we have selected an assortment to show you all angles of this noble grape.
We’ve also decided to feature wines all coming into the U.S. from one importer – Dalla Terra. They have been one of our Italian wine suppliers for 25 years and we’ve always admired their combination of professionalism, selection of producers and support of the industry. Not surprisingly, they were one of the first national importers to step up and promise a 3% contribution of all sales to the Independent Restaurant Coalition to support restaurant industry workers who are out of jobs right now. So that means your purchase of these wines will not only give you some variety on the table but also help those in need as we navigate these uncertain times.
Let’s get to the wines and the offerings:
TUSCAN EVERYDAY SIX-PACK – $100
Our Tuscan Everyday 6-Pack will include two bottles of each of these 3 wines:
2016 Casanova di Neri IrROSSO
This hearty Rosso is mostly Sangiovese with a little other red grapes in the mix. It’s pretty fruit-forward, bloody red in color and has a plush supple finish. The smoothest and richest version of Rosso we tried, we think this will be a real crowd-pleaser. It went great with our Porkchops Scottadita. 2017 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina
Selvapiana is one of the top 3 estates in the smaller Rufina region closer to Florence, having cemented their reputation over decades of meticulous vineyard management and cellar selection. The 2017 Chianti Rufina is super classic Chianti – a nose full of cherry fruit, with darker bing cherry and strawberry swirled together on the palate and a little tannin on the finish so you know you’re drinking wine from Italy. Whether you’ve scored a take-out pizza from Lovely’s or Scotties or you’re making red sauce for a mid-week meal, this is going to do the trick to satisfy your red wine cravings.
2018 Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano
The wines from the hilltown of Montepulciano have always been a little more rustic than their Tuscan neighbors. Perhaps that’s due to the Sangiovese clone used here, known as Prugnolo Gentile. Or perhaps it’s a style preferred by the locals. Maybe both. This Rosso is consistent with that profile – earthy blackberry fruit leather flavors with some tight tannins when you first open it, we found it softened up nicely after we’d had a glass, corked it and returned to the bottle 2 days later. That also tells me it will age well for several years. But if you’re looking for a red you can open and drink over a couple days of home confinement, this will fit the bill.
TUSCAN LOVERS MIXED CASE – $250
The Tuscan Lovers Case features 3 bottles each of the 3 wines above plus 2 bottles of Vino Nobile and 1 bottle of Brunello:
2016 POLIZIANO Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
This wine has been produced from a classic blend of 85% Prugnolo Gentile and 15% Colorino, Canaiolo and Merlot since the first bottling back in 1968. As the vines have matured, so has the intensity of the wine in the bottle. But modernized winemaking techniques and just 14 months of barrel aging now keeps the fruit fresh and forward. Structured, with a good chewy bite on the front, we loved how smoothly this wine went down. Pair it with your favorite grilled items, anything a little smoky or fatty will play well with all the dark prune-like fruit flavors in the wine.
2014 CASANOVA DI NERI Brunello di Montalcino
One of the premiere Brunello producers, Casanova di Neri makes several different bottlings. This is their White Label bottling, made from the heart of the estate vineyards, fermented in large conical stainless vats and then barrel aged for 3 1/2 years in oak. 6 months after bottling, the wine is released to the market, so 2014 is still the current vintage available (with 2015 on the way shortly). It’s a testament to their winemaking attention to detail that I have never had a poor quality wine from di Neri, even from the worst vintages. And 2014 was a challenging, cold and wet vintage, yet the wines di Neri made are ample in fruit, lush and pleasurable. I don’t think this is the Brunello to age 20 years, but it is definitely one to let breathe for 20 minutes while you set the table and then sit down and soothe your soul while sheltering in place!
