Starting April 2, participating hotels and restaurants feature specialty cocktails benefiting local nonprofits
PORTLAND, Ore. – (April 4, 2018) – Travel Portland and numerous partners in the hospitality industry are launching the Portland Charity Cocktail Program to engage residents and visitors alike in supporting area nonprofits.
The program asks participating restaurants, bars and hotels to create and feature a specialty cocktail; one dollar of the proceeds from each specialty cocktail sale will be contributed to the 2018 Portland Charity Cocktail donation fund. Each quarter, Travel Portland will collect donations from program participants and present a check to a designated nonprofit organization.
More than 18 participating restaurants and bars have joined the program, and a full list of these businesses can be found at TravelPortland.com/charitycocktail.
2018 Charity Cocktail Beneficiaries
The two nonprofits selected as beneficiaries for the inaugural citywide program are:
– Transition Projects: All donations made through June 2018 will benefit the Transition Projects Mobile Engagement program. Entering its third year in July 2018, the Mobile Engagement Team connects hundreds of people living on the streets in downtown Portland with essential resources and support services to help them end their homelessness and transition to permanent housing.
– New Avenues for Youth: July through December 2018 donations will be contributed to New Avenues for Youth’s new Service Industry Training & Placement Program. The program will help young people develop the necessary skills for gaining and retaining employment in the tourism and hospitality industry, while fostering a pipeline of talent for the region’s growing tourism sector.
The charity cocktail concept was originally created by Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s general manager, Ryan Kunzer, who rolled out a similar program in fall 2017. The immediate interest from guests and the program’s early success led him to bring the concept to Travel Portland for expansion.
“Portland is an incredible city. At the Kimpton, we found that both residents and visitors are looking for opportunities to help strengthen this community,” said Kunzer. “Through the Charity Cocktail Program, our staff are able to talk with guests about one of the many ways we are giving back to those in need while inviting them to contribute with a very low barrier to entry.”
Inspired by Kunzer’s success, Travel Portland invited Portland hotels, bars and restaurants to join the effort. “Every year, the city of Portland welcomes nearly 9 million visitors, in addition to entertaining residents from across the region,” said Tamara Kennedy-Hill, vice president of community relations at Travel Portland. “By expanding the 2018 Portland Charity Cocktail Program to the city’s broader hospitality industry, we have the opportunity to raise visibility for two tremendous nonprofit organizations while also creating a sustainable funding stream to support important projects within our community.”
The 2018 Charity Cocktail Program will be managed through the Travel Portland Education and Training Foundation, which will track donations and distribute funds to the designated nonprofit organizations.
“We are truly grateful for this innovative and very thoughtful opportunity offered by Portland’s hospitality industry,” said Roma Peyser, director of development at Transition Projects. “The Charity Cocktail Program will continue to support the Mobile Engagement program, which is designed to connect people experiencing homelessness to the services they need, while strengthening the overall well-being of our community.”
