GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS
Well, Labor Day is here, and while this is the unofficial end of summer, we are going to keep BBQ-ing, hammock-ing, and making backyard cocktails for as long as the sun will shine (and we are crossing our fingers for a long, long summer). Don’t forget, you can pick up grill kits and cocktail syrups on our MWL at Home shop page.
In other news, we’ve extended the free valet parking through the rest of the year! MWL members and guests can leave one car per reservation with the valet next door, and we’ll pick up the tab.
Have more than one car? You can pay for your guests and clients’ valet in the Library. Plus, Hyatt Centric has extended a special 25% off discount code to our MWL members and friends. Keep reading for more information!
Last, but not least, congratulations to our newest MWL member! A big thank you goes out to everyone who supported Equitable Giving Circle by purchasing a Derby raffle ticket. Read more about this fantastic Portland resource below.
As always, thank you for your support, and we hope to see you soon.

Meet Your Maker and Cocktail Class
WOODFORD RESERVE DOUBLE OAKED + VIRTUAL TASTING & COCKTAIL CLASS WITH MASTER DISTILLER CHRIS MORRIS
Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris will discuss the intricacies of double oaked as well as answer any questions you may have about the distillery or any of Woodford Reserves amazing whiskies. Tickets include a set of bitters, syrup and gifts to help create variations on an old fashioned at home!
Chris began his career in bourbon in 1976 as a trainee in Brown-Forman’s central lab. In 1997, he found himself as an understudy to Lincoln Henderson, Woodford Reserve’s Inaugural Master Distiller, who in 2003 Chris succeeded. In the years that followed, Chris was responsible for creating the world’s first bourbon finished in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Barrels. He’s also credited with developing the world’s first maple barrel; a difficult feat made easier when you command your own cooperage.
Equitable Giving Circle is a community of people committed to creating peer-led, community-funded transformational change. Thank you, MWL members and friends for helping us raise over $1,500 to help them achieve their aim to build immediate and increased equity throughout Portland’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities through a combination of fund development and network building opportunities that center economic equity.
If you missed your chance to support this inspiring Portland group through our Kentucky Derby raffle, you can still donate here!
Introduced to the world in 1996, the Woodford Reserve distillery occupies what was originally the Oscar Pepper distiller. Distillation began in 1812, while the main structure was built in 1838. Unsurprisingly it stands among the oldest distilleries in Kentucky.
Every year, Woodford Reserve releases a special bottling as a part of their Master’s Collection series. These bottles are a celebration of master distiller Chris Morris’ vision and commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
The 2020 Batch Proof release is the same recipe as the standard Woodford Reserve and is batched in the same way. However, instead of proofing it down by adding water, this whiskey goes straight from the barrel into the bottle, giving us a rare opportunity to experience Woodford Reserve in a way that is normally impossible outside the distillery.
On the nose you may perceive hints of toasted nuts, vanilla, leather, with notes of sandalwood, clove and other baking spices, underlined by warm toffee and banana. Despite the high abv, this whiskey flows surprisingly smoothly across the palate with it’s rich buttery texture.
Up front, expect flavors of rich caramel and nutty toffee. Behind that, you’ll find hints of pepper and warming spices as well as brown sugar and dried fruit. Even when your glass is empty, you can enjoy a long lingering finish reminiscent of warm banana bread.
The high abv of the Woodford Batch Proof may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it does lend itself well to being enjoyed on the rocks or with a few dashes of water and would make an amazing old fashioned. It would also pair well with grilled meats and burgers, or at the end of the night, it would be amazing with a rich, dense chocolate cake.

September’s cocktail comes to you from MWL bartender Jared Gattey. The Major Fed (named for a 2020 Kentucky Derby contender) is an elegant riff on a perfect Manhattan.
“My goal was to highlight the nutty notes I get from Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.” Jared says. He uses Amontillado sherry and black walnut bitters to draw these notes out and underline their warm tones.
Try one at the Library, or stir one up at home!
1.5 oz Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
.5 oz Amontillado sherry
.5 oz Byrrh Grand Quinquina
1 barspoon cinnamon syrup
3 dashes black walnut bitters
To Make:Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice and stir for 10-20 seconds until well chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe and enjoy. If you would like the recipe for our house made cinnamon syrup, just let us know!
