The Library Journal – April 2021 | Vol. 06, Ed. 04

April 7, 2021

GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS
Let us begin by saying welcome back to our members and guests, bartenders, cooks and team members! With familiar faces around every corner, it’s starting to feel like home again at the Library.

We’re excited to announce that beginning April 14th, we will be expanding our opening hours to include Wednesdays and Sundays. Member reservations are available online and by emailing us at info@mwlpdx.com.

If you’re not (yet) a member at the Library, and you’re dreaming of that magical wall of whisky, now’s your chance to skip the three-year wait and become a Member! Help us fight hunger by donating $250 or more to the Oregon Food Bank, and you will go straight to the top of the wait list! Details are here.

We also want to take this opportunity to reintroduce some of our team members in new roles. Congratulations to Lani Sickman who is taking the reins as General Manager; Kyle Sanders, who is now heading up the education program and spirits curation as Education Manager; and Cody Mulcahy, who has graciously accepted the Lead Bartender position! Keep reading for more exciting Library news including the arrival of the MWL Weller Full Proof and a brand new menu item.

As always, thank you for your support. Stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Your Friends at the Library

MWL SINGLE BARREL PROJECT – WELLER FULL PROOF BOURBON

Join us in celebrating the newest addition to our single barrel collection, MWL Weller Full Proof! We’ve set aside a limited number of bottles for MWL members to add to their home collection or MWL locker.

How it works:

  • MWL Members can RSVP to reserve their bottle on the MWL Events page on the website.
  • Receive a confirmation from us that your bottle is ready as well as directions to the designated Portland liquor store where you can purchase it.
  • Bottles are first come, first serve! Limit one bottle per member.

THE BUTCHER’S CUT – NOW ON THE MENU IN THE LIBRARY

Say hello to the new Butcher’s Cut dish on the Library menu – a rotating specialty cut from our favorite ranches served over black garlic celery root pureé, orange and bourbon roasted broccolini and Marchand de Vin sauce. For those of you who missed the New York strip from local, woman-owned Carman Ranch in March, read more about their Portland doorstep delivery options and cow share program below.

PURVEYER SPOTLIGHT – CARMAN RANCH – WALLAWA, OR

Spurred by a vision to sustain their century-old family ranch, Carman Ranch has grown in the last two decades to include a small group of the West Coast’s most respected producers.Their focus is on soil regeneration and carbon sequestering, and they just happen to produce incredibly delicious grass-fed beef while doing it.

“It’s a virtuous cycle that results in superior nutrition, strong rural communities,  delicious food and a better planet,” says fourth-generation rancher Cory Carman.

Read more about Cory and her ranch’s holistic management theories here. In March, MWL featured New York strip steaks from Carman Ranch in the Library. If you missed them on our menu, check out their mouthwatering display of specialty beef, pork, chicken, and lamb cuts available for delivery to Portland.

Dreaming of stocking up for summer grilling? Carman Ranch offers heritage hog and cow shares. Choose your own adventure with quarter, half and whole shares delivered to Portland or picked up at the ranch.

MWL HOUSE POUR – ANGEL’S ENVY BOURBON

MWL has partnered with some of our favorite brands to bring our members the House Pour: a complimentary taste of a new, classic, interesting, or just-plain-fun spirit.

April’s House Pour is Angel’s Envy Bourbon. Members who drop by in April can request a half pour on the house!

YAMAZAKI 55 – THIS BOTTLE IS BREAKING ALL THE RECORDS…AND IT’S COMING TO THE LIBRARY
In June, Yamazaki released 100 bottles of the oldest Japanese whiskey ever made – a 55-year old single malt distilled in 1960. A bottle from a sister barrel recently sold on auction in Hong Kong for six figures, becoming the most highly valued bottle of Japanese whisky on record.

MWL has purchased one of the 20 bottles arriving in the US, and we are planning a once in a lifetime weekend event this fall to open it and (you guessed it) drink this special bottle. Stay tuned for more details!

A LOVE LETTER TO BAR CARTS – WE MISS YOU!

If you, like us, are missing the rumble of the bar carts across the wood floors in the Library, don’t worry, they will be back soon!

We’ve temporarily parked our carts to facilitate social distancing and keep our guests and our team as safe as possible during the initial reopening phases. Feel free to email us for more details about our safety and sanitation procedures.

INTRODUCING THE BULLETIN BOARD

Every month, we are happy to share notices from members regarding bottles you are looking to purchase, sell or trade, as well as upcoming events and opportunities. Submit contributions to this section by emailing us at membership@mwlpdx.com.
