Portland, Ore. (December 2020) – The Four Top, Portland’s homegrown, nationally distributed food-and-beverage-focused digital audio program, announces today that it is now an independent entity. Formerly presented by Oregon Public Broadcasting, The Four Top is the recipient of two national awards: The James Beard Award as well as the IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Award for the best culinary podcast in the United States.
The Four Top is a roundtable discussion of the hot-button topics in food and beverage featuring pundits, creators, thinkers, editors, and makers. Recent guest panelists have included journalists and writers like Roxane Gay of The New York Times, Khushbu Shah of Food & Wine, and Soleil Ho of the San Francisco Chronicle. Past guests have included everyone from comic artist Lord Birthday to rock star Courtney Taylor-Taylor of The Dandy Warhols.
“We are so grateful to OPB for believing in us and partnering with us as we launched this project,” reflects The Four Top’s executive producer and host, Katherine Cole. “It was time to spread our wings, but we will always have fond memories of working with Steven Kray, Nalin Silva, and the rest of the gang in the OPB sound studio.”
“For us, the pandemic has been something of a mixed blessing,” adds producer Izzy Kramer. “We had to give up the lively and spontaneous dynamic of in-studio recording sessions. In return, we found that we had access to fascinating guest panelists all over the United States. Recording remotely ultimately strengthened our content.”
The Four Top, named after the restaurant-industry term for a table for four diners, aims for fast-paced, fun, free- flowing conversation on meaty, juicy topics. But while the tone is light, the content is serious: Each episode zeroes in on an area in which the food and beverage industries have intersected with human rights, sustainability, and pop culture. Recent shows have dug into issues such as racism within food media, the deadly conditions faced by farmworkers in fall 2020, and body shaming.
The Four Top team is small but mighty, consisting of Cole, Kramer, and resident musician, audio tech, smooth-voiced MC, and rapper Kielen King. Rachel Grossman and Lex Rule provide marketing and social media support.
As The Four Top contemplates its 2021 editorial calendar, it is represented by Caroline Edwards, Director of Podcast Initiatives at ICM Partners, one of the world’s leading talent agencies.
