It’s no secret that we love to drink. Typically, we turn to wine, cider, or (especially) vermouth to ease us into a state of joy and relaxation, and believe the sense of conviviality engendered by a bottle shared among friends is one of life’s great pleasures. But sometimes, the very thing that helps us to unwind—namely alcohol—is the thing that hurts the most (raise your hand if you’ve ever moved a bit more slowly after a night of wine drinking… I’ll go first).
Thankfully, the world of nonalcoholic beverages is no longer limited to sparkling water and bottles of sweet, sparkling apple juice. A host of new companies have been employing sophisticated techniques and complex recipes to deliver uncommonly delicious n/a beverages that hold their own against more traditional “adult” libations. Often, they draw inspiration from the very things they are not, including vermouth, classic cocktails, and wine. Plus, variety is the spice of life, and we all need a night off occasionally. So if you’re choosing not to take the tipple for whatever reason, try one of our favorite n/a beverages.
Husband-and-wife founders Shelley and Jeff Elkovitch craft 3 varieties of dynamic n/a cocktails, each full of layered, nuanced flavors perfect for any situation. Eva’s Spritz is light and refreshing, leading with tart flavors of rhubarb and citrus. Saskatoon meanwhile is dark and herbaceous, with earthy bitter notes of douglas fir and black pepper. And Smoky No 56, perhaps the most beguiling of them all, recalls smoldering campfires with hints of maple and salt.
An intriguing non-alcoholic blend of yuzu, elderflower, ginger, lemon balm and gentian root, evocative of long hot days lounging languidly along the Mediterranean, where aperitivo hour is every hour. Billing itself as a “drink to remember,” Ghia packs all of the flavor of classic European aperitifs without any of the punch, just the thing for clear-headed hangs at the pool, park, patio and anywhere else you need a spirited drink without the spirits. Mix one part Ghia to one part bubbly water (or tonic, or ginger ale, or….?) and dream of Italy.
Sascha Archer uses local ingredients and double-ferments her shrubs, resulting in deeply flavorful tonics perfect for use in drinks, smoothies, marinades, soups, and stews. Island-grown fruits combine with aromatic roots and plants and raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar for a balanced and fruit-forward libation. Mix with seltzer or tonic for a refreshingly tart non-alcoholic cooler, or use in cocktails to punch up flavor.
We still have a few shares left of our Olive Oil CSA! Grab one now before our container arrives later this summer.
Our Olive Oil CSA helps to support our small farm partners. It works like this: Early in the year you buy a CSA share for $100. We use the cash to pay the farmers, and when the season’s olive oil arrives here, that share is worth $120. It’s good for anything we sell at Wellspent Market, not just olive oil. Money well spent indeed!
We’ve got a lot of fun stuff happening this summer, including new product drops, wine tastings, and even a few exciting collaborations in the works. We want to get as many folks involved as possible, and in an effort to grow our community we’re offering you a 10% discount when you get a friend to sign up for our newsletter.
