Portland’s first xurreria welcomes local ice cream makers each month for summer’s perfect pairing – ice cream and xurros – kicking off the series with Pinolo Gelato, July 20, 21 and 23 from 5 p.m. to close
PORTLAND, Ore. (July 19, 2017) – 180, Portland’s first Spanish xurreria, will launch an Ice Cream Pop Up Series, featuring different local ice creams or gelato each month, all summer long. The perfect way to cool down, this summer match will include cold treats from Pinolo Gelato, Salt & Straw Ice Cream and Stellar Pop. Local favorites will be paired with fresh, authentic made to order xurros. Beginning this week, 180 welcomes Pinolo Gelato and their handmade gelatos, affogatos, all served from their gelato bicycle, straight from Italy! Enjoy fresh xurros paired with creamy, cold gelatos beginning Thursday, July 20th, Friday, July 21st, and Sunday, July 23rd from 5 p.m. to close. Pinolo Gelato flavors will include their Cioccolato, Fior de Latte, and a seasonal berry sorbetto, which is also vegan. All gelato will come with a plain xurro, and will be $4 for one scoop and $6 for two scoops. In addition to the Pop Up Series, 180 makes their own ice creams in house, available any day of the week, perfect companion for a xurro or enjoyed in an affogato. Although Americans may be familiar with the churro they get every year at the local county fair, it doesn’t compare to authentic xurros ( chu rō) from Spain. Originally dreamed up by husband and wife team José Chesa and Cristina Baéz, long time friend David Martin joined forces with the couple to bring 180, Portland’s first xurreria, in order to share the traditional and beloved Spanish xurros. José and David were raised eating these scrumptious treats in Spain and are eager to transport those young and young at heart to the streets of their youth, where they can watch xurros made to order and fried at 180 degrees celsius (hence the name) through large windows in the open kitchen space. The menu features plain, sugar & cinnamon, chocolate covered, or filled xurros, expertly paired with hot chocolate supplied by Cocanú and coffee from Local Roasting Company.
