Celebrate Oregon Cheese Month with Ancient Heritage Dairy Thursday, September 7th
September is Oregon Cheese Month! This week we’re celebrating with a cheese tasting from Ancient Heritage Dairy on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30.
Ancient Heritage Dairy was founded by Paul and Hank Obringer in Scio, Oregon. In 2015 they moved to Southeast Portland, where they are located today. They are currently Portland’s only urban creamery. Ancient Heritage specializes in cow and sheep’s milk cheese, most of which are a combination of both milk types.
We will have three kinds of cheese available to taste and purchase on Thursday, including Hannah, Hannah Reserve, and Willow Creek. All three varieties are raw mixed milk cheeses. Both Hannah and Hannah Reserve are natural rinded cheeses. Hannah is generally aged between 6 and 9 months and has a semi-firm creamy paste. The current wheel has notes of citrus and a pleasant earthiness. The wheel of Hannah Reserve that we will be tasting has been aged 22 months, is firm in texture, and has notes of roasted nuts and toffee. Willow Creek is a wine washed cheese and has been aged about 90 days. Willow Creek is semi-soft with notes of melted butter and brewer’s yeast.
We will be pairing each cheese with a beer, wine, or cider for the tasting Thursday. Come try some tasty pairings and celebrate Oregon Cheese Month with us and Ancient Heritage Dairy!
We will continue our celebration of Oregon Cheese Month next Thursday, September 14th, with Sarah Marcus of Briar Rose Creamery!
