Salt & Straw Student Created Menu Launches April 1st

April 1, 2022

April Menu to Feature Five Creative Ice Creams from Students Ages 6-12

PORTLAND, Ore. (March 31, 2022) – Salt & Straw Ice Cream is celebrating the return of its student inventor series, launching in scoop shops and online on Friday, April 1. For this kid-approved series, Salt & Straw works with students to dream up and create a one-of-a-kind menu, highlighting the limitless creativity of kids.
Salt & Straw’s 2022 student inventor flavors were originally submitted as part of the company’s “Rad Readers” menu through a partnership with Scholastic in 2021, as a way to encourage creativity and reading during a time when most students were attending school virtually. The company encouraged students to submit their wildest ice cream ideas, before selecting five flavors to bring to life. Some students visited Salt & Straw’s kitchens to help produce their own flavors, while providing feedback and new ideas along the way.
The Student Inventor Series ice creams will be available by the scoop, flight or pint at all scoop shops through Thursday, April 28th. Ice creams are available for nationwide shipping via www.saltandstraw.com. By joining the Salt & Straw Pints Club, you can sign up for a sneak peak of the latest seasonal flavors delivered right to your doorstep before they hit scoop shops.

‘22 Student Inventors Menu:

One of our all-time favorite menus originated back in 2011 when our R&D team turned over the ice cream-creation keys to some of the best inventors we know: kids!  There’s nothing more wildly fantastical than the imagination of a child. Last summer, we partnered with Scholastic for our Rad Readers series and invited kids to submit their wildest stories. We’ve chosen the most epic stories submitted by some of the most imaginative children and turned their whimsical plots into one-of-a-kind ice creams. Come along on a taste adventure as we push the boundaries on flavor fantasy and invite everyone to further explore their own creativity. (Please note, all below descriptions written directly by the 4th grade inventors)

Bottomless Limes!
Invented by Rae, 12. In celebration of a most mysterious holiday, we ribbon in Key Lime cheesecake with hunks of golden pie crust, crystallized with brown sugar and ginger, and shards of sprinkle-studded chocolate bark.
“Ever wonder why we celebrate Hole Day? Why do we hang string lights and turtle decorations? Why do we eat key lime pie ice cream for dinner on Hole Day?” Come along and uncover the mysterious origins behind this infamous holiday.

The Ice Cream of Moo
Invented by Bridget, 10. Silky chocolate ice cream dashed with a touch of salt, studded with clusters of candied caramel cashews and hunks of maraschino cherry-laced chocolate ganache.
“If there’s one thing everyone from the land of Oo knew, it’s the best flavor of ice cream is caramel cashew. The land of M’s residents objected quite very, for they knew the best flavor was chocolate and cherry. Both flavors combined is what we all like. Yummy things happen when flavors unite! Now there is one country where once there were two, their national flavor is chocolate caramel cherry cashew.”

Triple Tropic Twist
Invented by Cooper, 11. Bright mango-pineapple jelly and citrus mousse swirl through a wildly fruity raspberry sherbet.
“Once upon a time, in an ice cream parlor, there lived the ice cream flavors. Inside the parlor, there was the town of Meltville…” and so begins the epic saga of Mr. Mango, Ms. Pineapple, and Mr. Tangerine – three friends who learn we’re all a bit stronger when we have someone to lean on.

Rosie the Pink Flamingo
Invented by Charlotte, 6. For Rosie the Pink Flamingo, it’s pink everywhere, all the time – even down to her favorite treats! Into bright strawberry ice cream goes housemade gummy bears and loads of pink sprinkles.
“Rosie was a girl. She wanted to be a flamingo. So she stood on one foot. And ate pink food. She ate pink berries. And pink gummy bears and sprinkles. She turned pink and moved to the beach”

The Adventurous Llamanaut
Invented by Asher, 7. We go intergalactic with pink and blue marshmallow “milky way” fluff glistening against purple-y pitch dark cherry ice cream.
“Llamanaut is a little llama who wants to be an astronaut. She loves to do the moonwalk. So she goes to the NASA shop. She gets landing gear and engine and adds it to her ship. She goes to space and sees all of the plants. She gets distracted by the Milky Way. She was the first llama in space!”

ABOUT SALT & STRAW ICE CREAM

Salt & Straw Ice Cream is a Portland-based, family-run ice cream company that was founded in 2011 by cousins Kim & Tyler Malek. Salt & Straw makes unbelievably delicious ice creams that tell the narrative of artisans, meaningful food movements and important social causes. The debut Salt & Straw Cookbook was released in April 2019, published by Clarkson Potter. Salt & Straw presently has three scoop shops in Portland and one in Lake Oswego, with new scoop shops arriving in Beaverton and Eugene in 2022.
