Salt & Straw Ice Cream Brings Back Fan Favorites This March

February 24, 2017 by Food Dude

Celebrating six years of ice cream creation, Salt & Straw opens the time capsule and brings back five fan favorite ice cream flavors for the month of March

PORTLAND, Ore. (February 23, 2017) – Salt & Straw Ice Cream, the iconic Portland-based, family-run ice cream company known for its artisanal, chef-driven approach to an American classic, will crack open the ice cream time capsule, bringing back five favorite flavors for the month of March. With over 300 ice cream flavors created since Salt & Straw opened its doors, this year customers had the chance to vote for their favorite flavors from years past – bringing the winners back to all Portland scoop shops for one month only. Known for seasonal menus which rotate every four weeks, showcasing the compelling stories of what is happening in each community – sometimes those flavors are all too short lived resulting in a bittersweet goodbye to one flavor of ice cream that stole our hearts and saying hello to a brand new menu of potential favorites. Join us as we open up the flavor time capsule and celebrate a few favorites one last time like Pots of Gold & Rainbows, a technicolor trip back to Saturday morning cartoons and big bowls of Lucky Charms first served in March 2013, and the salty, sweet and irresistible Chocolate Caramel Potato Chip Cupcake from August 2015.

The Vote Back Your Favorites series flavors are available locally at Portland Salt & Straw scoop shops March 3rd through 30th. Portland monthly flavors are also available for national shipping, visit http://saltandstraw.com/shop/

“Vote Back Your Favorites” Series
Here at Salt & Straw, we love to say our ice cream flavors are like sand art—beautiful, meticulously crafted, and short-lived. Recipes are created with the intent and love of a seasoned artist, flavor stories are perfected by both our kitchens and servers, ingredients are carefully hand-picked from farms around the city, and customers search with fanatical frenzy for their own personal favorite of the month. And after an all-too-short four weeks we change seasons, and bring in a totally new menu. In most cases, those seasonal favorites disappear, never to be seen again—the bittersweet moment when we say goodbye to that one scoop of ice cream that stole our hearts and say hello to a brand new menu of potential favorites. With this model, we’ve created nearly 300 flavors of ice cream since 2011! This year, we’re celebrating six years of ice cream creation—and every single month throughout those years has brought us delectable flavors that never cease to extinguish our undying love for the fleeting beauty of ice cream. Ice cream that melts. Ice cream that amplifies happiness. Ice cream that pushes the limits on what you thought ice cream could be. This year, we gave our customers and our Salt & Straw team a chance to vote for their favorite flavors from years past—and now we’re bringing the winners back to our scoop shops for the month of March! Join us as we open up the flavor time capsule and celebrate a few of your favorites one last time.

Cinnatopia
What’s not to love about a warm cinnamon roll covered in ribbons of frosting? We channel that just-out-of-the-oven goodness with this fresh-baked flavor: cinnamon sugar spiked vanilla ice cream, chunks of real cinnamon rolls, and that quintessential cream cheese frosting. This flavor was served in April 2016 as part of our Student Inventor’s Series—a partnership with the creative ice cream lovers in our neighborhood schools—by Ella, a second grader at Portland’s Abernethy Elementary.

Chocolate Caramel Potato Chip Cupcake
Salty, sweet, and irresistible, this decadent flavor from August 2015 garnered legions of fans enamored with the malted, salted chocolate ice cream loaded up with bite-sized pieces of cupcakes frosted with chocolate ganache and soaked in coffee syrup to keep them extra gooey. Then we take things to a whole new level with handfuls of chocolate-coated potato chips and a generous ribbon of housemade caramel. Inspired by the infamous Highway to Heaven cupcake from Kir Jensen’s former bakeshop, The Sugar Cube, this flavor has its own motto: if you’re going to have a scoop of ice cream, you might as well go all in and embrace your hedonistic side!

Pots of Gold & Rainbows
First served in March 2013, this technicolor flavor is a trip back to Saturday morning cartoons and big bowls of Lucky Charms. We meticulously sort hundreds of boxes of cereal by hand, steeping the whole grain bits overnight in cream to capture that bottom-of-the-bowl sweet milk taste, and saving the mountains of rainbow marshmallow “charms” to stir into the finished ice cream.

Rose City Riot
Rosewater ice cream, ribbons of saffron cream, and fresh-roasted pistachios—a traditional combination of Middle Eastern ingredients—is a tribute to the Persians who invented ice cream a few millennia ago and made all of ice cream history possible. This flavor was first featured in March 2015 to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, in collaboration with Portland’s Iranian American Community.

Coconut with Petunia’s Salted Caramel Bars (V)
This ultra-creamy coconut ice cream is drizzled with dreamy caramel, dotted with housemade chocolate ganache, and studded with chunks of salted caramel bars from Portland’s Petunia’s Pies and Pastries. Served from June 2014 to February 2015, this vegan and gluten-free favorite kicked off perennial partnerships with the local allergy-friendly bakeshop, but this original is one of our most requested flavors year round—one taste and you’ll instantly understand why.
