From Creepy Crawly Critters and Dracula’s Blood Pudding to The Great Candycopia, Salt & Straw’s spirited October menu is full of tricks and treats
PORTLAND, Ore. (September 25, 2017) – Salt & Straw Ice Cream raised up from the grave favorite tastes of Halloween’s past and conjured the spirit for a few new sinister concoctions for October’s Spooktacular Series. To create the five flavors, the kitchen team explored questions like: “What if Halloween monsters (in this case, Dracula) had recipes that had been passed down generation to generation?” or “What do ghosts taste like?” and “If you could make your most nostalgic Halloween candy into an ice cream, what would it be (hint: all of them)?” The results are a menu that will shock and delight through hair-raising flavors such as a chilling encounter with Essence of Ghost, The Great Candycopia, a gruesomely tasty combo of salted butterscotch ice cream with an abundance of homemade snickers, whoppers, heath bars, and peanut butter cups mixed in or take in the Freckle & Hyde Potion, Dr. Jekyll’s transformative potion, a cauldron of cranberry sorbet freckled with dark chocolate and bitter melon coconut sherbet with coconut ash coated pop rocks to shock and delight.
The flavors are available by the scoop, flight or pint at all Salt & Straw scoop shops in Portland, Sept. 29 – Oct. 31. The Halloween variety pack is also available for nationwide shipping for $65 plus shipping costs through Salt & Straw’s website, www.saltandstraw.com.
October: The Spooktacular Series
The Great Candycopia
Guaranteed to deliver “shock-olate” delight. It’s enough to make you “terror” your hair out! This ice cream isn’t just “punny”, it is a gruesomely tasty combo of salted butterscotch ice cream and an abundance of house made snickers, whoppers, heath bars and peanut butter cups. Sweet tooths beware as each scoop is a trick-or-
treat bag of candy turned inside out and jammed into an ice cream maker.
Dracula’s Blood Pudding
This ice cream is specifically crafted for this year’s halloween “thrill shreekers!” We’ve taken careful measures to balance both delectable and frightful. A heady mix of spices and cream are cooked into real blood pudding and then spun in Salt & Straw’s ice cream laboratory. This one will make you squirm with delight.
Essence of Ghost
This frigid sherbet is meant to conjure up the chills and shivering pleasure experienced from wisps of ghouls spooking a foggy graveyard. Conceptually, jets of tasty gray pass through the deep foggy sherbet. Each bite of this sherbet delivers a shrill set of flavors that are bitter, sweet and slightly musky. This one is creepy and delicious.
Creepy Crawly Critters
This flavor is Salt & Straw’s own spooky Halloween tale: Picture yourself in a lush green field. The air is fresh, the sun is shining, and tall soft grass bends beneath your hands. You notice a single grasshopper, flitting from place to place. He lands on your hand, and you gently try brush him away, but find that you can’t. You find an ant on your shirt, then several more on your cheek, and as you try to catch them they scatter. Suddenly a horde of insects is crawling, buzzing, and flying around you. They land on your hands—their hairy legs sticking to your skin. You try to run, but you trip, and fall headfirst into a teeming, squirming world of Creepy Crawly Critters. This may sound dramatic, but it’s not as far-fetched as you may think. This scene is captured in a scoop, with a light and fresh green-grass ice cream that hides swarms of real dark chocolate covered crickets and coconut toffee-brittle mealworms.…Wait, did that one just move?
Freckle & Hyde Potion
“Late one accursed night, I compounded the elements, watched them boil and smoke together in the glass, and when the ebullition had subsided, with a strong glow of courage, drank off the potion.”—Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson. This flavor captures the first taste and sensation of Dr. Jekyll’s transformative potion, distilling this haunting moment in literature into a single scoop. A cauldron of cranberry sorbet freckled with dark chocolate and bitter melon coconut sherbet with coconut ash coated pop rocks are bubbled together to shock and delight. A swirling mystery of textures, sweet and bitter, surprising and smooth, these two colors and textures battle against each other, like two sides of a personality.
