Saké Fest PDX is right around the corner now

June 11, 2019

Nowhere else can saké lovers try so many different bottles and unique food pairings in one evening

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 11, 2019 – Portland is rumored to have the highest saké consumption of any city outside Japan so it makes sense that Saké Fest PDX returns each summer. This year’s event, taking place in the Portland Ballroom at the Oregon Convention Center on Wednesday, June 26 will showcase over 180 different bottles of saké, paired with unique foods provided by 15 local chefs and food purveyors.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase SakePedia: A Non-Traditional Guide to Japan’s Traditional Beverage. “SakePedia is really about de-mystifying an already unnecessarily mysterious beverage. I try to convey how approachable sake is for drinkers of all kinds of alcohol beverages, in as un-pretentious a way as possible,” explains author Jeff Cioletti.

He continues, “When I include my own personal tasting notes, I try not to use ridiculously esoteric flavor comparisons— as is too often the case in the wine world. I don’t want saké drinking to be an exclusive club— I want everyone to join! And I think Saké Fest PDX is the perfect venue at which to present my book because I feel like we have a very similar mission in that regard!”

Davvy Lee with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits adds, “Saké Fest PDX is one of the best food and beverage festivals in town, some say the nation! People should come to discover how amazing saké is– it’s all about learning and having fun.”

Saké is a drink made from rice that originated in China approximately 5,000 years ago. It came to Japan around the 3rd century AD where it has been constantly enhanced and refined. Saké, as it is known today, originated at the beginning of the 20th century with the advent of modern brewing and bottling techniques.
