OREGON’S FIRST ROOM & BOARD OPENS TODAY IN NW PORTLAND; OPENING MONTH BENEFITS LOCAL NON-PROFIT P:EAR
35-year-old company brings classic, contemporary American-made home furnishings to Portland’s Pearl District; Opening month features tastings from local artisans including Alma Chocolate, Public Coast Brewing and more
Portland, Ore. (May 15, 2017) — Room & Board, the Minneapolis-based retailer offering modernAmerican-made furniture and accessories, announces its grand opening today, Monday, May 15thfrom 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be Room & Board’s first store in Oregon and its 15th in the U.S. The retailer, which has a devoted following, already has a large online customer base in the Portland metro area. To celebrate the new store, opening month will feature tastings from local makers including Alma Chocolate, Ancient Heritage Dairy, Bull in China, Cellar 503, and Nossa Familia Coffee. The retailer will also support the local non-profit p:ear throughout its opening month donating $1 per customer visit through June 11. P:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation.
The new store is located at 380 NW 13th Avenue, in Portland’s Pearl District, at the corner of NW 13thand Flanders. Its historic building was formerly home to Cargo, a popular store that relocated to SE Portland, and originally housed the Fisk Tire Company in 1924. The Room & Board showroom features 9,500 square feet of modern design inspiration set against a backdrop of hardwood floors, an original timber ceiling and abundant natural light. The Portland firm of Jones Architecture joined Gensler, a global architecture, design and planning firm for the interior build out. The general contractor is Portland-based Joseph Hughes Construction.
“We’re thrilled to join other design retailers, art galleries, and boutiques in the thriving Pearl District and honor the historic integrity of this building,” says retail market manager Jim Scolastico. “Portland consumers are design savvy and we’re excited to bring modern, sustainable furnishings and accessories to more homes and businesses throughout Oregon.” Room & Board recognized Portland as a viable market after receiving strong demand and positive feedback from its customers. The company currently has over 5,000 customers in the Portland area.
Exclusive Designs from Oregon Artisans
Room & Board has partnered with local artisans to curate an exclusive line of products offered only at the Portland retail location. Local products include Imperial Stock Ranch alpaca woven throws and blankets, Pigeon Toe Ceramic tumblers and carafes, Caravan Pacific Lighting lamps and more. Additional Oregon-centric accessories including framed vintage postcards of Multnomah Falls and the Oregon Coast will be available in the store. Room & Board’s popular Calvin Collection is handcrafted by Wood Castle in Albany, Oregon, from Pacific Coast maple and includes the Bailey Cocktail Table. The company, founded in 1978 by the Loe family, is now one of the last remaining furniture makers in Oregon, and their mission to create heirloom-quality pieces still informs their design aesthetic.
