Prep Your Garden With These OSU Master Gardener Tips!

March 4, 2021

To Our Market Community,

We hope that everyone is enjoying the sunshine this week. It has been a balm for the soul after the crazy winter storm that many are still trying to recover from. Even if it means nothing more than pulling weeds, it is a delight to be outside on a sunny day, fantasizing about all of the wonderful things you want to grow this year.

Spring is just around the corner and that means it is time to get your garden ready for planting in April. Many of our favorite nursery growers will be joining us then so you will want to make sure to have everything ready.

According to OSU Extension Service, your March garden calendar should include:

1. Planning your vegetable garden

2. Spread compost over garden and landscape areas

3. Fertilize evergreen shrubs and trees using acid type fertilizers for rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas.

4. Fertilize caneberries

5. Divide hosta, daylilies and mums

6. Plant berry crops (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, etc.

7. Protect new plant growth from slugs. If you have pets, make sure to use pet friend slug bait.

8. Start rose blackspot control tactics at bud break.

We will see you all this Saturday at the Market, from 10AM-1:30PM!

Love Is All You Need

Because of the storm we had to cancel the market on February 12, the day before Valentine’s Day, so we didn’t get to cover some of our favorite products for celebrating the day of love. Even though Valentine’s Day is past we can still appreciate these products in the name of love!

If you haven’t tried Lovere yet, you may be asking yourself what does pumpkin seed mylk have to do with love — and the answer is plenty! Pumpkin seeds are the best natural, plant based food to support sexual health because they contain arginine, zinc, and other minerals necessary for sexual function. Lovere also includes a careful selection of adaptogens to support the body’s hormonal function. Adaptogens are found in many plants and herbs and assist the body’s ability to cope with fatigue, hormones and life’s stressors. You can read up more on adaptogens and how they work in this article from Healthline.

Lovere has three blends to choose from based on the desired support you’re looking for, Energy, Matcha; Libido, Dark Chocolate; and Fertility, Golden Milk. While all of the blends will support sexual and hormone function they are also great tasting supplements to help support stress and anxiety relief, immune function, memory and focus, circulation, among a host of other benefits. Grab a couple of bottles to try and you’ll find yourself subscribing the next time you visit the market!

When it comes to skincare and wellness lips are often overlooked other than the occasional use of balm. But if you’re wanting to pucker up it’s time to up your selfcare game with your lips. Peace of Soap has designed a Kissing Kit that’s like a mini facial for your lips. Each kit includes a scrub to scrub away dead skin from chapped lips, a hydrating mask for a concentrated dose of moisture, and a kissing ointment to lock in moisture. Pick one up to pucker up!

We never tire of red velvet and though Valentine’s Day is over, we’ll never stop eating red velvet anything. Taming Turtle’s red velvet cookies have a subtle chocolate flavor with hints of vanilla and sweet white chocolate chips in every bite. Preorder some and pick them up on Saturday! https://www.tamingturtle.com/

North Fork 54 Heart of Gold Tisane is a warming tea blend of herbs and botanicals created to support love and grief. This caffeine-free blend is named for Brigham’s grandmother, Goldie Elizabeth. He blended it for her memorial celebration with all the love that she was known for. Made from the leaves of the Hawthorn tree, organic rose petals and our farm’s tulsi (holy basil). All of the plants in this blend support heart health and are natural stress relievers. A cup of this blend makes for a gentle heart opening way to start or finish your day.  It is great for dealing with grief or loss and to get in touch with your heart’s wisdom.

The month of March brings us daylight savings time, St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring. It also brings many new vendors to the market.

Joining us this week are:

Riverland Family Farms (formally known as Denison Farms)
AMylk – pure plant based mylks
Bearded Oregon
Fraga Farms Goat Cheese
Early Mom Flowers
Wraps

Also making an appearance this week:
That’s Good Garlic
Felton & Mary’s Barbecue Sauce
