Portland, Oregon USA
Portland’s very own beloved and longstanding dessert oasis has made history once again, winning the title of “World’s Best Champagne and Sparkling Wine List” for the fifth year in a row. This award comes from the prestigious and authoritative wine publication, The World of Fine Wine, in London.
“When it comes to champagnes and sparkling wines, Pix Patisserie certainly is ‘untouchable’.”
“Wakerhauser is full of passion, as can be reflected in the wine list, and applies much attention to detail, ensuring as many bottles as possible include clearly displayed disgorgement dates, for example. Our judges were impressed once again this year—remarking on Pix Patisserie’s offering of “superlative Sherry”, and by-the-glass options, but also drawing attention to the wide-ranging but excellent selection of Champagne available.”
“An amazing monumental selection.” – Judge Elin McCoy
The judges were impressed with the sheer selection of champagne, sparkling wine and sherry on the list, as well as the economical pricing, precise organization, most impressively, the listing of disgorgement dates. “You know exactly what you’re getting,” commented Tom Stevenson, judge and globally respected champagne expert. The wine list, created by Pix’s owner and executive chef Cheryl Wakerhauser, contains over 400 champagnes, 130 sparkling wines from across the globe and 160 sherries, representing all price points and bottle sizes.
Pastry entrepreneur Cheryl Wakerhauser, aka “Pix”, has combined her love of treats and a bottle of Champagne to create Pix Pâtisserie, a Portland eatery that could bake right into the streets of Paris. The hip, eccentric bakery specializes in French desserts, chocolates and ice cream, combined with an extensive selection of beverages – namely Champagne and sparkling wine. It is her love of fine wines that earned Wakerhauser the award for World’s Best Champagne & Sparking Wine List for five consecutive years between 2014 and 2018.
Pix Pâtisserie specializes in Champagne, with a collection featuring more than 400 bottles. Wakerhauser’s list also contains an additional 130 sparkling wines, meticulously selected from big and small growers around the world. Likewise, there are more than 160 varieties of sherry available, as well as a tasting flight offering seven of their finest selections. Wakerhauser is full of passion, as reflected in the wine list, and applies much attention to detail, ensuring as many bottles as possible include clearly displayed disgorgement dates, for example.
Our judges were impressed once again this year – remarking on Pix Patisserie’s offering of “superlative Sherry”, and by-the-glass options, but also drawing attention to the wide-ranging (444 options), excellent selection of Champagne and Coteaux Champenois. When it comes to champagnes and sparkling wines, Pix Patisserie certainly is “untouchable”.
On the awards, World of Fine Wine Editor Neil Beckett commented: “In its fifth year running, and at its first live ceremony, the World Best Wine Lists Awards was honored with the presence of guests from every continent apart from Antarctica. I think that the geographical spread of our top winners speaks volumes for the global spread of fine wine and also for the global scope of these awards”.
The World’s Best Wine Lists celebrated its fifth anniversary with a prestigious judging panel – chaired by Neil Beckett, World of Fine Wine Editor – featuring: writer and broadcaster, Andrew Jefford; award-winning sommelier, Andreas Larsson; publisher and writer Ch’ng Poh Tiong; wine writers Elin McCoy, Francis Percival and Alder Yarrow; sommelier Luciana Girotto; and wine writer and lecturer Anne Krebiehl MW. They have assessed over 1,000 of the world’s best wine lists to determine the shortlist. The nominees and winners are based on a range of criteria including breadth, depth, interest, quality, value, clarity and accuracy.
