October 16, 2019

Matt Berson and Angela Reat, owners of Love & Squalor Wines, open new urban winery and tasting room in SE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (October 16, 2019) – On Thursday, October 24th Matt Berson and Angela Reat, the husband and wife team behind Love & Squalor wine, will open Portland Wine Company, their brand new winery and tasting room. The urban winery will be home to their Love & Squalor wine label which they started in 2006, as well as other projects from the team. Open daily, Thursday through Monday from 4-7pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5pm, the family-friendly Portland Wine Company will offer a menu of light snacks and sharable plates. Flights, glasses and bottles will be available to enjoy at the in the comfortable tasting room. It will be a destination for wine shopping, featuring their complete portfolio of wines from the Portland Wine Company, including their labels, Love & Squalor, Garageland, Mothershucker and the ‘Antsy Pants’ Reserve label, plus other wine projects not available anywhere else. The 5,000 square foot space, is additionally home to tenant winemakers Jackalope Wine Cellars, and Landmass Wines. To celebrate their opening, Portland Wine Company will offer case discounts for the first 6 months.
“Really, my favorite thing about being a boutique producer, is getting the chance to pour what we made for the end consumer,” says Portland Wine Company co-owner and winemaker Matt Berson. “This new facility and tasting room will allow us to directly share the fruits of our labors and tell the story of the wines to our Portland community.”

“It’s been my dream to have a place to call our own, where we can make and pour our handcrafted wines. Portland Wine Company is a big leap forward for our family business. The culmination of a dream. We can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings,” says Portland Wine Company co-owner Angela Reat.

Founded in 2006, the Love & Squalor label initially launched with 65 cases of wine, mostly Pinot Noir plus a splash of Dry Riesling. Winemaker Matt Berson brought his talent and experience travelling the world to work in vineyards and wineries as far flung as New Zealand, Germany, and Argentina. The name came from a rediscovery of J.D. Salinger’s book “Nine Stories” and the lead story: For Esme, with Love and Squalor. Paired with an inspired sketch of some slips on a line, the label itself was born. Love & Squalor produces a range of well priced Pinots, coming from six sites in various Northern Willamette AVAs. And, Berson’s beloved Riesling, also coming from multiple sites, all over 40 years-old. Love & Squalor also produces a Rosé of Gewurztraminer, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Every bottle is handcrafted, blended by Berson in a labor of love. Since their beginning, Berson and Reat have created several different labels under the Portland Wine Company umbrella, including Love & Squalor, Garageland and Mothershucker, a dry white table wine created to pair perfectly with Oregon oysters. Their “Friends With Benefits” Wine Club offers exclusive access to limited release bottlings, pre-releases and library wines shipped straight to your doorstep twice a year.

The Portland Wine Company tasting room will offer a selection of snacks to enjoy while wine tasting.
