Portland Beer Week’s Best Bites, Pairings and Foodie Friendly Events

The 9th annual Portland Beer Week (June 7-16th, 2019) is far more than a beer festivals, it’s a 10-day showcase of culinary delights and libations. Exploring unusual and creative pairings, many of Portland Beer Week’s dozens of events feature some of the best food and drink experiences you will ever have.

The artisan food and beer pairings begin with the new Bean to Bar: Chocolate and Beer Festival on Sunday, June 9th featuring some of the regions best chocolatiers and brewers. The mouthwatering and fun food friendly events continue with Mussels from Brussels, the Brewers Burger Brawl, a Nordic beer dinner and more.

Snackdown! Brewer/Chef Pairing Throwdown is the ultimate beer and food pairing event and as usual closes out Portland Beer Week with a bang on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16th. Snackdown 4D features 10 brewer and chef pairing teams with some of the best and brightest stars of Portland’s restaurant scene paired with northwest brewers.

Portland Beer Week is presented by Loyal Legion, home base for Portland Beer Week events. Co-presenting sponsors Stormbreaker Brewing, pFriem Family Brewers and Breakside Brewery helped make 2019 possible.

Bean to Bar: Chocolate and Beer Festival

Portland Beer Week, Xocolatl de David and Ruse Brewing present the Bean to Bar: Chocolate and Beer Festival.

Beer and chocolate were born to be together. With compatible flavor profiles and a similar production process, artisan chocolatiers and brewers come together in a harmonious showcase on Sunday, June 9th from 1-5pm at the Bean to Bar: Chocolate and Beer Festival. The inaugural Bean to Bar festival showcases ten Oregon chocolatiers and what makes their product so unique, each will be paired with a northwest brewery pouring beers complimentary to the chocolates. All festival attendees will be able to sample the chocolates, use tickets for beers and purchase bars to-go directly from the chocolatiers!

All entries come with a $7 coupon good for purchasing chocolate to-go at the festival. General Admission includes free sampling, a collectible Bean to Bar branded glass and three drink tickets. VIP tickets get attendees an hour early entrance to sample before the crowds, as well as a 33 Chocolates tasting notebook.

CHOCOLATIERS: Xocolatl de David, Map Chocolate, Only Child Chocolate, Cloudforest Chocolate, Woodblock Chocolate, Seahorse Chocolate, Moonstruck Chocolate, Missionary Chocolate, Batch Chocolate and Creo Chocolate.

BREWERIES: Ruse Brewing, Sunriver Brewing Co., pFriem Family Brewers, Stormbreaker Brewing, Little Beast Brewing, Breakside Brewery, Hi Five Cider, Baerlic Brewing, Vanguard Brewing and Reubens Brews.

Mussels from Brussels

Mussels from Brussels is a friendly beer pairing and dining competition where four brewers compete for the best shellfish, housemade sauce and beer pairing. For only $30, beer and mussels fans are invited to come enjoy a bowl of mussels and frites with a flight of four dipping sauces and four beers from this years participants: Ecliptic Brewing, pFriem Family Brewers, Lompoc Brewing and Little Beast Brewing. This casual evening pairing showcase is open to the public, and anyone who arrives between 7 and 10pm on Monday, June 10th while supplies last, no tickets or reservations necessary.

This annual event was formerly held at Bazi Bierbrasserie where Upright Brewing was the regular champ. Thanks to Bazi and Mussels from Brussels founder Hilda Stevens with helping the transition as well as Alex and Michelle from Grain & Gristle for helping bring it back.

 

Brewers Burger Brawl

Portland Beer Week, Wayfinder Beer and Nicky Farms present the 2019 Brewers Burger Brawl on Wednesday, June 12th with reserved seatings at 11:30am and 1:30pm. This returning event (last held at The Hop & Vine in 2015) pits four brewers (Stormbreaker Brewing, Von Ebert Brewing, pFriem Family Brewers and Wayfinder Beer) against each other in a juicy head-to-head competition for the best burger / beer pairing. It’s a no holds barred cage match (if Wayfinder’s enormous enclosed patio counts as a cage) where the public is the winner and helps decide this year’s annual champion.

Tickets are $35 (includes gratuity) for four slider-sized but stuffed burgers plus 5oz pours of each brewers’ beers, with complimentary Wayfinder fries and Salt & Straw ice cream as well. Additional beers will be available for purchase at the bar. Everyone gets a vote for People’s Choice of each session, and three judges will determine their own Grand Champion!

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Growing Gardens, a local nonprofit (www.growing-gardens.org), Growing Gardens will also be selling raffle tickets for Nicky Farms sampler packs and tickets to Wild About Game in September. Nicky Farms will also have their fine products for sale to-go (www.nickyusa.com/nicky-farms).

Meltdown: Salt & Straw meets Little Beast Brewing

What happens when you pair the tart, mixed culture fruit beers of Little Beast Brewing with the taste-provoking, small-batch ice creams of Salt & Straw? You get the warm fuzzies and the brain freeze at the same time!

On June 14th, from 12:00pm-8:00pm, join Little Beast to celebrate the first anniversary of their year round patio on SE Division St. The Little Beast brew team and the Research and Development team at Salt & Straw came up with three extra special beer and ice cream pairings for the occasion:

  • Roasted Strawberry Coconut Vegan Ice Cream paired with Dream State (Foeder Aged Ale with Strawberries)

  • Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons Ice Cream paired with Golden Stone (Oak Aged Ale with Peaches, Nectarines, and Apricots)

  • Double Fold Vanilla Ice Cream paired with Black Cap (Foeder Aged Ale with Black Cap Raspberries)

 

Portland Beer and Cheese Festival

The 8th annual Portland Beer and Cheese Fest produced by PDX Beer Week and Cheese Bar and Chizu owner Steve Jones is the premiere event of it’s kind! This years carefully curated fest will be held Saturday June 15th at The Bindery Annex building, home to Culmination Brewing.

This beer and cheese pairing invitational festival features ten creameries paired with ten breweries, plus artisan chocolate, charcuterie and more hand-crafted snacks that pair beautifully with beer. Each ticket gets you all ten hand curated and paired beer and cheese pairings by master Cheesemonger Steve Jones. SNACKDOWN! 4D: Brewer/Chef Pairing Throwdown

PDX Beer Week & Gigantic Brewing Company present SNACKDOWN!!!! 4.0 on Sunday June 16th at The Evergreen event space above Loyal Legion. SNACKDOWN! is a fun and entertaining food and beer pairing event where 10 of Portland’s best Chefs and 10 Oregon Brewers are paired into 10 Brewer/Chef teams to make their greatest snack and beer pairing. Guests will choose their favorite pairing and the winners will be awarded the SNACKDOWN Belt!

This event is designed to be more fun and loose than you’re standard beer dinner. Imagine a WWF style Smackdown with brewers and chefs hyping their pairing on the mic – possibly while sporting wrestling themed costume. DJ Rev Shines will be on the decks keeping the party live. $49 includes all 10 small plates and TEN 5oz beer pours + a collectible glass. All proceeds after expenses go to P:EAR
