It’s official: the Small Business Administration has announced the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) is empty and the portal will close on July 14. We have heard from hundreds of people who are feeling frustrated and hopeless. We know the pandemic is not over and hundreds of thousands of businesses still need help.
Do not give up.
When the IRC formed last year, we asked for $120 billion in relief because we knew the crisis facing independent restaurants was that dire. The vast majority of independent restaurants and bars have endured over sixteen months of losses without any meaningful relief. They face inflated costs of supplies, customers less willing to dine out, and debt that will soon come due. The initial $28.6 billion in the Restaurant Revitalization Fund was always meant to be, as Majority Leader Schumer says, a ‘downpayment’ on a larger program that could ensure everyone who needs help can get it.
Congress must finish the job and refill the fund to ensure every independent restaurant can survive and thrive.
Because of your phone calls, Zooms, and letters to Congress this past year, the Restaurant Revitalization Fund became a lifeline for the 105,000 restaurants and bars who received an RRF grant. Let’s do the same for the 265,000 who applied to RRF and were turned away.
Here’s what we can do: email and then call your members of Congress at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to refill the RRF. Refer to our congressional outreach guide here.
The Independent Restaurant Coalition is not only an advocacy organization, but a local business community that supports and fights for each other. We will support you during your time of need by doing what we do best: fighting for every member of our vast community. To those who were awarded grants but had them rescinded: we’re working each day to refill the program so you can access the relief you deserve and should have had. Fill out our form to share your experience and help inform our advocacy.
Thank you for all you are doing to support one another, acting as a community, and making it clear that Congress must refill the fund as soon as possible.
