Hot soup, Italian wine and warm fire fuel the annual party
What: Specialty food importer Jim Dixon – known as the “olive oil dealer” to top Portland chefs and Italophiles – will roll up the garage doors at his Real Good Food SE warehouse for the annual, celebratory holiday garage sale.
Shoppers can sample and purchase from Dixon’s tightly curated selection of fresh-pressed Italian and California extra virgin olive oils, hand-harvested Portuguese sea salt, coveted Katz vinegar from California and other beautiful, hard-to-find imported ingredients.
More than a “garage sale,” this convivial and intimate gathering evokes a small, rural Italian food festival, and is a mix of holiday shopping and cold weather fun. Dixon rolls open the warehouse garage doors, cranks out the awning on his old, beloved VW van, and stokes the outdoor fire while guests warm up with a glass of wine or a bowl of his homemade soup.
History of a Portland tradition…
It started 15 years ago in the garage at Jim Dixon’s NE Portland home. Dixon, a former food writer and James Beard journalism award finalist, started shipping in olive oil he and his wife discovered on one of their travels to Italy. In order to support his own habit, he’d bring in a barrel and sell to his chef friends and neighbors. Every winter, these chefs and food lovers would stride up his driveway, empty wine bottles in hand, ready to capture and take home some fresh-pressed liquid gold. While a lot has changed in Portland, this tradition has not! The annual garage sale lives on, and it’s as authentic and memorable as it always was.
