We’re back this week with some fun Spanish finds for your drinking pleasure.
Back in 2014, I had the chance to zoom around Spain and visit wineries from Madrid to Galicia. The trip culminated with me meandering along the Camino di Santiago from Pamplona until I reached the outskirts of the Rioja wine region, where my bicycle’s handlebars just seemed to be magnetically pulled toward the historic town of Haro. From there, I popped in and out of half a dozen cellars and tasted and observed some amazing traditions dating back hundreds of years.
In the hills of Rioja Alavesa which is hovered over by the Sierra Cantabria mountains, I had one of the most wonderful visits at the historic but modernized Ostatu estate. Their wines have always struck me as classic, approachable, affordable and delicious.
So for this week’s Wine Finds, I revisited the current releases and found all 3 colors to be in top form and worthy of your drinking attention.
For the serious Rioja fan, I’ve also included one of the most interesting creations from the famous winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, whose family’s Remelluri estate is majestic, and who realized that there were so many very old Tempranillo vineyards in neighboring villages that were being neglected, he started a project to resurrect them and vinify the grapes in small, regional lots. This project goes by the name of Lindes de Remelluri and the town where the vineyards are featured appears on the label – for today’s offering, it comes from LaBastida.
So here we go – if you’re interested in having these wines delivered to your door this week, please order by 3pm Tuesday, when we will cut off this offer, unless it sells out sooner (which keeps happening, so don’t delay ordering).
And to keep your fridge full of Viola white wines, here’s a coupon code for 20% off any Viola Pinot Bianco or Collina d’Allegre bottles you choose to add to your cart. Just enter Coupon CodeWHITEDISCOUNT20 before you Checkout.
Finally, if one of the wines features appeals to you more than the others and you want to order individual wines, just email me and I will accommodate assuming there are still bottles left of your request after the offer closes.
Thanks and hope you all have a terrific week,
RIOJA EVERYDAY SIX-PACK – $100 Our Rioja Everyday 6-Pack will include two bottles of each of these 3 wines:
2019 OSTATU Rosado Tutti-frutti, oh rootie! Crank up the Chuck Berry music, set some chorizo and padrons on a platter and head out to the patio to enjoy this delicious pink wine made from Tempranillo and Garnacha growing in the cool Alavesa hills of Rioja. Packed with wild strawberry flavors and a bit of weight to it, you’ll be happy pairing this with everything from antipasti to grilled chops.
2019 OSTATU BlancaIt’s hard to choose a favorite when you have 3 distinct wines in 3 different colors but I’m leaning toward this white wine after last night’s tasting. Made from the lively Viura and the aromatic Malvasia grapes, the vines are approaching 80 years in age and the complexity that gives this white wine is pretty impressive. And yet it’s still super affordable and easy to drink. The high altitude where these vineyards are located helps maintain balanced acid and minerality, that magic combination when it comes to Alpine white wines. You could pair this with a light mid-week meal, or you could just drink it during your next Zoom meeting when your concentration is waning and you’ve strategically positioned yourself off camera! We won’t tell.
2016 OSTATU Rioja Alavesa Crianza When you look for a wine that overdelivers in its price category, it’s hard to beat the values out of Spain. When you are in the middle of the most prestigious wine zone in the Country and the wine is almost 4 years old already and it still sells for around $20, you know you’ve struck gold. That’s the story here – dark, chewy, textured and full-bodied Rioja Crianza, which is the ‘entry’ level designation for the region, meaning the wine is aged a minimum of 2 years total, 1 full year in oak for red wines. Fermentation of the organically farmed grapes here takes place in stainless vessels, then the wine is racked into French barriques of 225L size (the type you are most used to seeing). After a year, it is racked and bottled and aged another year before release. Now with a couple more years of bottle age, this wine is really singing. We found flavors as diverse as dried strawberry, blueberry, carob, cinnamon, nutmeg and dark fruit leather. I would say it is fruity but at the same time very dry, a common trait of Rioja in general. It’s a classic and we know you are going to love it!
RIOJA LOVERS FULL CASE – $250
The Rioja Lovers Case features 3 bottles each of the above wines (2019 Ostatu Rosado, 2019 Ostatu Blanco and 2016 Ostatu Crianza) plus 3 bottles of this beauty:
2015 Lindes de Remelluri Vinedos de Labastida A lovely Rioja example made from a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Garnacha. Telmo Rodriguez sources the grapes from 21 neighboring farms with vineyards aging from 25 to 80 years. Skillfully fermented in stainless tank then aged for a year in French barrique, the wine shows dark plum in color, has fruit notes ranging from huckleberry to wild sweet raspberry and a really nice leathery texture on the very dry finish. This should continue to mellow out beautifully for another 5 years in your cellar but we had trouble stopping ourselves from finishing the whole bottle last night. And that was after sampling 3 other Rioja reds beforehand!
Bottles, mixed-packs and full cases of our wines can be ordered. Discounts are already built into all of the pre-mixed packs. This week’s delivery date is planned for Thursday and if we can’t get them all done in one day, we will be out on Friday as well.
