The ramen shop is in an office building under the Hawthorne Bridge, right by the river in industrial SE Portland. It is also right by the science museum. On the outside there is a neon sign and some people lined up and little puffs of steam coming out the door.
The ramen shop is Noraneko ( which is Japanese for stray cats ^..^ ). There is the best gyoza and fried chicken (and even a great salad) but the energy is focused at ramen from the best ingredients for the guests and the taste is made one bowl at a time.
Stepping inside the small shop is like entering a magic-world of beautifully natural wood and steel and concrete. Very nice and low key with glass jars and plants, it is also like a Japanese restaurant with a health food co-op.
Instantly you experience the comfortable aromas of ramen and soup stock, and the steam and the air are moist from simmering pots. Everyone has a bowl in front of them and glasses are foggy. Teenagers, taxi drivers, waiters, office workers. The radiantly friendly, nice vibrating staff are boiling noodles, making dumplings, stirring broths and pouring drinks. The chefs are warm and concentrating on each soup.
There is a nice bar of natural drinks, beer and juice and natural wine, teas and handmade sodas and cocktails to compliment the ramen, the mood and the taste.
Open every day from 11:AM until 2:AM, Noraneko just takes a little time off in the morning
and otherwise is open and really looking forward to seeing you!
Nearby izakaya Biwa is Noraneko’s popular older sister restaurant. Biwa is also in SE Portland and everyone likes it for great family-like staff, sake, sashimi, small dishes and grilled food, and the best nice atmosphere. It is pretty sophisticated and also cool and lighthearted. It is also open late and since 2007.
KINA & GABE (キナ＆ゲーブ)
The shop owners are a couple: Kina and Gabe. Kina is an architect/ farm-girl, Gabe is a chef-mystic (that part is a joke!). They are both cat lovers. Kina isn’t Japanese (which is obvious when you meet her) but Gabe and Kina have connections and affinities with Japan and really like it and get to go there and are pretty sure that they will retire (or something) there someday. Gabe sort-of speaks Japanese at least…
They are also interested in all kinds of other things too and are really neat!
