EUGENE, OR—April 2, 2015—Mountain Rose Herbs, one of the nation’s largest bulk suppliers of organic herbs, spices, and teas, has been named the 2015 Industry Leader Award recipient by the American Herbal Products Association and received the Corporate Excellence Award from Charities@Work. Both awards were presented in the month of March.
The 2015 Industry Leaders Award was presented during the annual AHPA member’s meeting on March 5th at this year’s Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California. The 2015 Corporate Excellence Award was presented during the 12th Annual Summit on Employee Engagement in Corporate Citizenship in New York, New York on March 23, 2015.
Mountain Rose Herbs is being recognized for going beyond normal business practices to advance the herbal industry, as well as overall excellence in employee engagement or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These efforts include their exemplary sustainability programs, a strict focus on organic agriculture, ethical sourcing, elevating the quality and identity of their botanical products, and disseminating free herbal information through social media and community events.
As a zero waste company, Mountain Rose Herbs works to incorporate the ethos of sustainability into every aspect of their operations. A staff of master recyclers sort and evaluate all waste for recycling, composting, or reuse. The company also sources recycled, recyclable, or compostable packaging and packing materials for their products – all of which are either certified organic, cultivated without chemicals, ethically wildharvested, or sustainably produced. In 2011, the company also founded the Mountain Rose River Project, empowering employees to organize restoration projects through their Paid Time for Community Involvement Program. The project partners with numerous state, federal, and non-profit agencies to restore riparian ecosystems, stream health, and native habitats around Oregon. Mountain Rose Herbs was also named the first Salmon-Safe business in Eugene, Oregon.
Each year, Mountain Rose Herbs also sponsors a large number of herbal conferences and herb schools around the country, and donates to free herbal clinics, as well as environmental and organic advocacy groups. In 2013, the company began hosting a series of free community events featuring lectures and workshops by visiting herbalists like Rosemary Gladstar and Susun Weed called the Free Herbalism Project. These events are not only free to the public, but also help raise money for organizations like the United Plant Savers and Occupy Medical. All of the live lectures are recorded and released online as podcasts and videos for the herbal community at large.
“Receiving this recognition is a huge honor for Mountain Rose Herbs. Our goal has always been to lead with our hearts and our values, meaning plants, people, and planet before profit. We work for the herbs that nourish and heal us, and sharing that message has never been more important,” said Shawn Donnille, co-owner of Mountain Rose Herbs.
Past winners of the APHA award include Herb Pharm, Gaia Herbs, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Trout Lake Farm, and Tom’s of Maine. Past winners of the Corporate Excellence Award include Sprint, Ameriprise Financial, and American Express.
