EUGENE, OR—July 13, 2015—Mountain Rose Herbs, one of the nation’s largest bulk suppliers of organic herbs, spices, and teas, announces its participation with the Non-GMO Project (http://www.nongmoproject.org/) to verify a selection of products. The ingredients were chosen for verification because they are derived from crops that have a known risk of GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) contamination.
Most of the organic herbs, spices, and botanical ingredients offered by Mountain Rose Herbs are not at risk of being contaminated since there is no industrial genetic modification of those plants. For years, Mountain Rose Herbs has been a certified organic processor through Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (http://tilth.org/), which is fully accredited with the USDA National Organic Program. This ensures that botanicals are grown without any synthetic pesticides or fertilizer, and that they are GMO-free.
In recent years, public awareness has grown and consumers want to make sure their food is safe, leading them to pay closer attention to the sources and identity of herbal products. This inspired Mountain Rose Herbs to take their commitment to organic agriculture one step further by ensuring the following products are verified through the Non-GMO Project: organic barley grass powder, organic beet root powder, organic broccoli sprouting seed, organic cocoa butter, organic cocoa butter wafers, organic coconut oil, organic flax seed, organic papaya leaf, organic sesame oil, organic sunflower oil, organic wheatgrass powder, organic wheatgrass sprouting seed, wheat germ oil, and castile soap. Non-GMO verification is a good option for high-risk ingredients.
“Forget the polished language and veneered statements,” says Mountain Rose Herbs Vice President and co-owner Shawn Donnille, “GMO’s suck. It’s that simple.” Donnille adds, “Mountain Rose Herbs has been against GMOs since the late 90’s when GMO’s came to market and this is why we made a commitment to only offer certified organic products which are GMO Free. Because of the important work the Non-GMO Project is doing, we felt that becoming certified by them further strengthened our position against GMO’s.”
Mountain Rose Herbs will continue evaluating products and is working toward adding more herbs, spices, and bulk ingredients to this list of Non-GMO Project verified items in the future.
