Missing hair tie

August 3, 2020

About a year ago, I was having lunch with my girlfriend, when she expressed her need for a hair tie. I love her dearly, but she always seems to be misplacing her hair ties, among other things. In that instance, I wished I could have been her “heroic” Enrique Inglesias and have a hair tie to offer. Every day after that, I wore a hair tie around my wrist, just in case she needed one.

Like many of you since lockdown I haven’t received a haircut, so my hair is long and a bit shaggy. It’s now usually found tucked away under a hat, but when I’m exercising or out for a run, that trusted hair tie around my wrist has come in handy.

For those new to the game, I like to share a little bit of my personal life in each newsletter. If you’d prefer to not hear about this, you can just scroll to this picture of a NY steak and potatoes and begin reading from there.

Beginning Saturday, August 8th, we’ll offer our Berlu experience in the comfort of your home.

“Berlu at Home” will showcase a menu similar in format to what is typically offered at the restaurant, with dishes designed to be assembled by you. More artful than standard takeout and easier than a meal kit, we do the cooking and you add the final touches to ensure each course is enjoyed as if you were dining in our restaurant. Our menu will change weekly, with bookings available every Tuesday at 12pm through Tock (this week’s menu is available now). A wine list, curated by Sommelier Brent Braun, will showcase wines by the bottle as well as coursed pairings to be enjoyed with your meal. In addition to our wine options, we will be offering a list of aperitifs from our friends at Someday Bar. We love you Someday!

One Berlu at Home meal will feed two guests and be $85, with wine pairing offered at $40. Odd numbered parties (1,3..) can be made by emailing vince@berlupdx.com with your request. A limited number of meals will be available for delivery each night and will be delivered by a member of our team. As always, our meals will be void of gluten and dairy. Slight modifications can be made and we will often dedicate a week’s menu solely to a plant based diet. If guests share images on social media, we ask that they include #berluathome. Each week, I’ll pick one person who I feel best executes the menu and they will receive 50% off a future Berlu at Home meal.

Our multicourse menu for one.

To do our part in reducing waste that comes with a takeout concept, all Berlu at Home meals will be placed in GoBoxPDX reusable containers. Diners are then asked to return the containers to one of the many GoBoxPDX drop sites or to Berlu. I feel strongly about our responsibility towards the environment and trust that our diners feel the same. To make things a little easier, we’ll include a small tote bag that you can place the containers in to return.

The Portland Farmers Market has been kind enough to donate their large canvas tote bags, which can be purchased as an add on and your Berlu at Home meal placed inside (meals will otherwise be placed in a standard paper bag). 100% of the proceeds will be donated to The Black Food Sovereignty Coalition, an organization aiding POC famers and connecting POC to food-related opportunities. Stylish bags, for a good cause.

We appreciate all of the support received in the past few months of lockdown. We look forward to seeing your familiar, albeit masked, faces and are excited to see our food on your plates.

With love and gratitude,

Vince
