Memorial Day Cooking Inspiration at Oregon City Farmers Market
Memorial Weekend at Oregon City Farmers Market.
This week we are sharing an excerpt from Sam Sifton, Food Editor at the New York Times. Since we’re a food market, his words seemed appropriate in light of the recent tragedy in Texas.”These are the most difficult mornings: the sun rising after senseless acts of violence, shining on beds that weren’t slept in, that won’t be slept in again.
And I’m here to tell you what to cook right now?
Food plays a central role in our reaction to tragedy, to death and grieving. Its why casseroles appear on the doorsteps and countertops of those experiencing it, why we feel the urge to roast chickens or assemble lasagnas when the news is grim. Food is comfort of a sort, and fuel as well, for anger and sorrow alike. We cook to provide for those we love and for ourselves. In the activity itself we strive to find relief, strength, resolve.
The whole weekend will be like that, I imagine, somber and muted all the way through to the Memorial Day on Monday, a holiday of remembrance”
We’ve received word from our berry farm’s their hopeful start date will be June 4th. Strawberries are still delayed given our wet, cool spring. RJ Farms will have a small amount to give us a taste of good things to come.
We’re excited to welcome the women of Mae Day Band to the market as part of our Summer live music series. A female, family friendly, local Pacific Northwest band who play a variety of folk, pop, and rock music from the 60’s-90’s. Unique, acoustic sound with rich harmonies and upbeat vibe. Bright colors and warm sounds wherever they go!
We have a fun activity for our POP kids! This Saturday we will be doing a potato stamping project which is always a great way to get creative with veggies. Our POP club is for kids ages 5-12. Stop by our booth (right next to Info) to sign up! Plus, receive 3.00 in tokens to use for fruits, vegetables and food plant starts in the market.
