William Marie Wines
What makes your winery unique? I guess I would say a couple of small things combined. Just being a first-generation wine maker coming from waiting tables in a restaurant is pretty unique in my perspective. Focusing on Cabernet and Syrah, from Washington grown grapes in Portland, Oregon is a little niche. I didn’t start out sourcing anything locally, I was kind of timid in comparison to the established wineries that were already focused on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the beginning. I felt there was a slim chance of competing with the ‘Domaine Serene’s’ and many other well-known wineries in Oregon. At the time, I had been piggy backing my grape contracts with my buddy, Bradford, who really took me under his wing in the first few years. Since then, I’ve become a custom crush client of his, and having the shared space in an urban setting makes things very convenient.
What kinds of wine do you make?
I strive to make delicious, balanced wines that are not over-extracted, or over-oaked, and can be enjoyed with or without a food pairing. I like wines that can just be drank and enjoyed on their own without being too complicated or too fussy. I’d have to say Cabernet Sauvignon is our focus, we’ve also made Syrah each year from our second vintage. Over the years, we began producing local Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I’m pretty happy with what we’re doing at this point, maybe in the coming years we will get into something more adventurous. Cab Franc would probably be next on our wish list….
What is your signature wine?
Cabernet for sure. It was the first thing I was introduced to when I was both beginning to drink and sell wine in the restaurants. It always demanded the highest dollar, and was the most popular wine that was selling (prior to coming to Oregon.) For all those reasons and because I really liked it, it was the first wine that I wanted to make when I started on my winemaking journey.
