In an effort to keep you up to date on wineries in Portland we will be featuring one winery a month in an email and on social media. The plan is to give you a couple of highlights in this email and then follow us on Facebook or Instagram to hear more about each winery. We hope you enjoy this snapshot into each of these unique small Urban Wineries.
Hooray For You Wine Company
When did your winery form and how did you get into the wine industry?
Hooray For You started with the 2017 vintage. Both Christopher and I were managing restaurant lists and active in the Sommelier community. I had worked a number of harvests as a cellar rat, done a year as a harvest intern, and helped local producers with punch-downs, botting, and various cellar activities just to see the process.
What makes your winery unique?
Hooray For You is a queer owned and operated wine company. We are “natural winemakers” though not dogmatic about what that means. We tend to intervene with the process as little as possible.
That said, we don’t vilify sulfur, and wine doesn’t make itself. We source fruit from Organic or Biodynamically farmed sites, and keep an eye on sustainability.
Who inspires you within the wine industry?
This is a hard one. We’ve had a lot of mentors, partners and friends in this industry. Pam Walden, Vincent Fritzsche, Carrie Wynkoop & Brianne Day (and too many more to mention) have all been great to us over the years.
Tom Monroe is one of the best guys in the business. He’s a really positive force, always willing to lend a hand, never a negative word about anyone. It’s hard to be perpetually positive, and he moves through this world with grace.
Do you have a favorite non-profit or cause your winery supports?
Historically we have tried to give as much as possible. We have worked with The Trevor Project through Cooper’s Hall, Dress For Success, Make A Wish Foundation, and a portion of our Merch sales goes to Glits – a trans housing organization.
