Ben & Andy’s Wine Pairings
Add a bottle (or two) of handpicked wines from our wine team to your Bird Box meal.
Colli di Luni Vermentino, Fosso di Corsano, Terenzuola, 2019, Italy
Colli di Luni is one of the only DOC appellations in Italy that crosses the border of two regions: Liguria and Tuscany. The vines are influenced by the warmth of the Mediterranean and by their proximity to the Apuan Alps which results in wines of great complexity and balance. Vermentino is a grape that is grown throughout Italy and France under a few different names but it makes the best wine when it is grown in close proximity to the ocean. The Guiliani family who owns Terenzuola emigrated to the United States in the 1800s and were very successful up until the Great Depression. In 1929 they took all the money they had left and returned to Italy where they purchased an 8-acre estate that is now the basis of the Terenzuola vineyard holdings. Vineyards are farmed organically and fermentation occurs in stainless steel with a little bit of time on the skins which adds a little bit of body and texture. The wine smells of pears, orange blossoms and fresh herbs and has the perfect amount of weight to match with roasted chicken.
Ribeira Sacra (Mencia), Vino Tinto, Guímaro, ‘19, Galicia, Spain
Ribeira Sacra is known for its dramatic terraces which date to Roman times and rise steeply above the Sil River. Pedro Rodríguez comes from a long line of farmers who in addition to growing grapes raised small farm animals and planted vegetables. Before 1991, they had made a small amount of wine and sold it in 20-liter glass containers at the local markets, by 1996 they were estate bottling and had joined the local appellation. They named their winery Guímaro which means “rebel” in the local dialect and was Pedro’s grandfathers nickname. The tinto bottling is sourced from vineyard plots throughout the region with an average age of 40 years old. It is un-oaked and fermented with indigenous yeasts. It smells of red cherries and plum with notes of tobacco and forest floor.
