Ben & Andy’s Wine Pairings
Add a bottle (or two) of handpicked wines from our wine team to your Bird Box meal.
Chinon Blanc (Chenin Blanc) — Clos de la Plante Martin — Domaine Charles Jouget — ’16 Loire Valley
Chinon is one of the prime locations in the Loire Valley for Cabernet Franc, red wines, and the name is almost synonymous with Red. However, no area is totally homogenous in its terroir (the combination of soil, weather, exposure, etc. that makes a place its own unique, well, place). Right on the edge of the appellation sits the Clos (walled vineyard) of Plante Martin with its limestone and clay soils. A spot ideally suited to Chenin Blanc – the main white grape of the central Loire. The grapes are picked in multiple passes to ensure each bunch is ripe and still vibrant with acidity. Then the grapes ferment slowly in cool cellars in a mixture of mostly old and some new barrels. The wine is all about balance, and has lovely aromas of quince and citrus and white flowers. The plate is broad with some richness – great foil to spice flavors – then finishes in a burst of mineral and lime & lemon notes.
Vigneti delle Dolomiti — Terre di San Leonardo — ’16, Trentino-Alto Adige
Carlo Guerreri Gonzaga heads the estate, and early in his career he worked for Bordeaux legend Émile Peynaud where he developed an appreciation for fine Bordeaux. His family had been growing Cabernet Franc and Merlot for decades, popular grapes in the area from the early 19th century, but in 1974 Carlo decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon with the goal of producing one of Italy’s great Bordeaux style wines. There is a twist though….it turns out that what was believed to be Cabernet Franc was actually Carmenére (the lesser known 6th Bordeaux grape). This bottling is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 40% Merlot and 10% Carmenére and bursts from the glass with aromas of blackberries, plum, pink peppercorn, and tobacco.
All of the meals will include 3-courses, a fancy salad for assembling at home, a protein with sides packed ready for re-heating, and dessert. Each box is designed to be heated at home and will generously feed two humans.
Dishes will vary each week.
