Mardi Gras is upon us and The Waiting Room in Northwest Portland, which celebrates New Orleans focused cuisine driven by local Northwest ingredients, is anxious to get the party started with a special King Cake donut contest! Every Friday starting January 6th through Friday February 3rd, The Waiting Room will serve King Cake brioche donuts complete with a different color hidden toy chicken inside each! Each color chicken will have a different prize value (for example, a gold chicken will receive a dinner for 4 at The Waiting Room; a purple chicken will denote smaller prizes such as a free half-bird or free order of ginger bbq shrimp).
Guests can also enter to win a grand prize via Instagram! All they have to do is post a picture of the donut and tag @twr.pdx and whichever photo receives the most “likes” will win!
The donuts will only be given to those who order a dessert off the regular menu (and will be complimentary).
About The King Cake
The King Cake is synonymous with Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans and holds a special place in Chef Thomas Dunklin’s heart (Co-owner/Co-chef of The Waiting Room). Starting on Epiphany (or “Three Kings’ Day”) on January 6, residents begin holding parties especially dedicated to King Cake. King Cake parties bring families and community members together to celebrate the joyous season of Mardi Gras, with its celebratory parades and festivals. Many in New Orleans take more pride in the Mardi Gras King Cake tradition than the parades. The dessert has the ability to engage friends and family in the “search for the baby,” the small figurine located inside the cake, which can represent prosperity. The tradition varies from family to family, but in the Dunklin household, the person who finds the baby buys next week’s King Cake.
