A floor shuffleboard pop-up takes over the Rose Quarter’s largest sports bar with games, retro drinks, and indoor fun all summer long
PORTLAND, Ore. (July 8, 2019) – Shortly after yesterday’s full platter of international soccer matches, the staff at Spirit of 77 began to transform one of Portland’s largest sports bars into a summertime recreation hall: Jumptown Shuffle Club. After storing away the bar’s long tables they assembled two entire, 52’, regulation shuffleboard courts flown in from St. Petersburg, Florida in the center of the bar, ready for action this afternoon. The pop up runs from today, July 8, through August 30th.
Floor shuffleboard, traditionally found in tropical resorts, on cruise ships and other vacation environs, is the summertime throwback packing hotspots like Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn. The coed contest is usually played with a disc (a “biscuit”) and a paddle (a “tang) in teams of two vs. two. Spirit of 77’s bar team has created special menus with tropical drinks for four served in a pitcher (Pink Flamingos, Pimm’s Cup and Margaritas), along with a menu of hand-held snacks of four servings each (shrimp cocktail, skewers, and pimento cheese tea sandwiches). There will be club team nights, and custom merchandise made for the life of leisure (tees, visors, bucket hats, sweats and more).
Spirit of 77’s usual food, beverage and beer menus will all be available during the pop up as well, and during major televised sports events this summer the bar will bring back its tables for viewing.
