Andy’s Wine Picks This Week
White #1
Montsant (Macabeu/Garnacha Blanca/Cartoixà), Dido, Venus la Universal, 2018 $28
This fantastic white wine is a blend of Macabeu, Garnatxa Blanca, and Cartoixà (Xarello). The grapes undergo different macerations: one portion is macerated with skin for 3-5 days in open-top barrels, another is macerated with skin for 24 hours, while the remainder is directly pressed. Raised in a mix barrels and locally made clay amphorae, Flavors of pear, lime zest, pineapple core, and slight herb, bright acidity, and beautiful chalky minerality, and great weight in the middle.
White #2 Rully (Chardonnay), Chêne, Domaine Dureuil-Janthial, 2017, Burgundy $55
Vincent Dureuil is one of the most respected growers and winemakers in all of Burgundy. This is extra impressive considering he makes wine the Côte Chalonnaise south of Burgundy’s most famous villages. A selection of fruit from estate-owned vines in ‘Chêne,’ located near the summit of the Montagne de Montpalais, at 900 feet in altitude, facing east on a steep slope. Chêne is one of Rully’s coolest vineyards; soils are rocky, pure limestone.
Red #1 Côtes du Rhône (Grenache/Carignan/Syrah/Cinsault), Domaine de la Biscarelle, 2016, S. Rhône $20
The fruit for this Côte du Rhône is sourced from just outside the borders of Châteaneuf du Pape. The soils are limestone and gravel. The grenache vines were planted between 1940-1970. Grenache and Carginan are the base of the wine with small percentages of Syrah and Cinsault blended in (the blend changes every year). Practicing organic but not certified, the wine is aged in concrete for about a year before bottling.
Red #2 Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Banneret, 2015, S. Rhône $56
This 3.5 hectare Lilliputian family-owned property is situated in the very heart of Châteauneuf du Pape. The estate traces its origins back to 1405. The traditional blending is 60% Grenache with famous parcels located on the highest parts of “Grand Pierre” terroir (very close to the Rayas vines), 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre near the Rhône. The remaining 20% is comprised of the 10 other grapes that are part of the appellation and which bring the unique complexity only found in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Many of the vines are 80 years old or older. The nose offers an array of raspberry, plum, spice, and Provençal herb aromas, with hints of game. The palate is redolent of red fruit and warmth, but with an underlying balance of mentality, acidity, and savory earthy notes.
All of the meals will include 3-courses, a fancy salad for assembling at home, a protein with sides packed for ready re-heating, and dessert. Each box is designed to be heated at home and will generously feed two humans.
Dishes will vary each week.
All boxes are nut-free, but we are unable to accommodate any further dietary restrictions or modifications at this time.
The Le Pigeon and Canard will be following strict safety procedures, and will offer curbside pickup or will bring the meal to your car.
