Gubbeen Farmstead Cheese
We just got a new shipment from Neal’s Yard Dairy in London. Within this shipment, we received two lovely wheels of Gubbeen. Gubbeen is an Irish farmstead cheese, made by Giana Ferguson in Cork. This semi-soft cheese has a dusty orange rind a dark straw colored paste. It is a wonderful gateway washed-rind cheese as its not too stinky, and instead delicate notes of fresh cream, mushrooms, bacon, and roasted nuts. Tom, Gianna’s husband, and his family have farmed at Gubbeen over six generations. When Giana and Tom married she brought the tradition of cheesemaking to the farm. We hope you can come over and try a taste of these rich and fluffy farmstead cheeses!
Rhone Street Wine Tasting
Greg Cantu of Rhone Street Wines will be hosting this week’s tasting. Greg will be pouring a three wines for us this Thursday, a sparkling rose and a white wine, both from Grochau Cellars, and a French red.
Here’s this week’s lineup:
Grochau Cellars, “Joyride”, Sparkling Rose of Pinot Noir, 2017, Chehalem Mountain AVA/Yamhill AVA, OR
This sparkling wine is made primarily from Pinot Noir, but also has been blended with 5% Pinot Blanc. The wine is both fruity and savory. It is aged on lees, which adds pleasant weight and texture.
Grochau Cellars, Melon de Bourgogne, 2017, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Made from the french grape muscadet, the grapes used in this wine come from Stavig Vineyard in Happy Valley. This white would be perfect served with seafood or fresh goat’s milk cheeses. It is bright with savory notes and a wonderful minerality.
Mathieu Paquet, Macon Rouge, Gamay Noir, 2015, Burgundy, France
This Burgundian red wine comes from the Ige terroir, know for its limestone and schist. Notes of red berries, dusty floral notes, and delicate black pepper compliment the classic tangy profile of Gamay.
We hope you can join us!

CHEESE BEER WINE CIDER:
A Field Guide to 75 Perfect Pairings
By Steve Jones & Adam Lindsley
We are extremely proud and excited to announce the upcoming release of Steve Jones & Adam Lindsley’s new book, CHEESE BEER WINE CIDER: A Field Guide to 75 Perfect Pairings. As the title suggests, it’s all about taking a great cheese and finding the very best beer, cider, or wine to drink with it. You may be surprised by the results! Along the way, you’ll learn about goats, cheese crystals, cider apples, and a smattering of other fun topics related to the stuff you’ll be eating. Steve and Adam spent the last three years eating gobs of cheese and drinking gallons of alcohol (“research,” you see) to ensure only the very best pairings make it to your cheese plates.
