Gluten Free Gem Embraces Their Coffee Shop Roots

Posted October 3, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Gluten Free Gem Embraces Their Coffee Shop Roots

PORTLAND, OREGON – October 3rd, 2018 – Gluten Free Gem, Portland’s first dedicated gluten-free bakery, is excited to announce their new espresso program launched on September 29th, just in time for the changing fall weather.

Gluten Free Gem makes delicious, artisanal pastries that do not taste discernibly gluten free. Their focused menu of espresso beverages will mirror the care and quality they put into their baked goods. “It’s important to me that our coffee is as good as our pastries. I’m proud of the high quality of our products, and I want this quality to be reflected in everything we do,” says long-term bakery manager Alleson Goldfinger. This quality starts with excellent beans locally roasted by Water Avenue Coffee, who have been the coffee supplier to the bakery and Gluten Free Gem wholesale customers for many years.

“The shop is a haven for those with food allergies, which we’re extending to our drink menu by not up-charging for most alternative milks. We hope to continue our reputation as a place where everybody, regardless of their food allergies, can enjoy a special treat,” continues Goldfinger.

With the introduction of their line of espresso drinks, Gem is returning to their roots—they first started baking gluten-free in 2006 as part of the Coffee Plant coffee shops. Old Portland fans may remember this cafe as a hub of the music community and a great place to hang out with a number of the people who went on to found notable Portland bars, radio shows, and courier services.

If you haven’t visited the Gem retail space at 140 NE Broadway, you can now stop by to enjoy a latte alongside their delicious cinnamon rolls, cakes, quiches, and more. The shop is open Sunday – Thursday from 7am – 4pm and Friday – Saturday from 7am – 5pm. More information about the shop, hours, and menu can be found at www.glutenfreegem.com.

About Gluten Free Gem:Gluten Free Gem is an independent, family-run bakery in Portland, Oregon that provides tasty treats for everyone. Owner Anne Miller started baking gluten-free at Corbett Coffee Plant in 2006 when her daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. By April of 2011, the bakery’s wholesale operation had outgrown its SW Corbett location and was moved into a larger production kitchen in Portland’s Rose Quarter. With this move the bakery’s name was changed to Gluten Free Gem, to celebrate the original Gems: Anne’s daughters Greta and Emma Miller.

In 2017 the bakery moved again, to 140 NE Broadway St., to make room for a larger production kitchen and a beautiful and sunny retail shop.

The bakery is one of Portland’s few GFCO Certified bakeries, which eliminates any risk of gluten cross-contamination. As part of this certification, they do extensive ingredient research to ensure that everything they use, as well as their facility, is clean of gluten. In addition to their gluten awareness, they also train all their employees about the risk of cross-contamination from other allergens. They are continually educating themselves on new research and information regarding Celiac Disease, gluten-intolerance, and gluten-free baking. They take the potential health risks of gluten contamination as seriously as the need for their pastries to taste delicious.
