What we’re drinking this month

Here are a few of the things we’re looking forward to filling our glasses with this month
Star of the Loire – 2-pack
$63 / 2-pack

“Romain Guiberteau owns some of the best land in Brézé, and makes dry chenins of punk rock violence, yet of Bach-like logic and profoundness. He is creating quite a stir.

The domaine is 9.4 hectares (under plantation, there is 12 hectares total), 7 of which are located in the great terroir of Brézé. A little more than half of the surface is planted to Chenin with the remainder planted to Cabernet Franc. Age of vines varies between 4 and 80 years old, with a hefty proportion of old vines. In 2000, Romain converted the vineyards to organic management and in 2003 he began the process towards the AB organic certification, obtaining it in 2007.” – Wasserman

Included in this introduction to Romain Guiberteau’s wines:

  • 2018 Saumur Blanc – A food-friendly crowdpleaser, this is Chenin blanc driven by mineral purity and vibrant acidity.
  • 2018 Saumur Rouge – Punchy and peppery Cabernet Franc the sings with red fruit, earthy spices, and rich soil. A perfect springtime red wine that can be served with a slight chill alongside just about anything you’d want to eat.

Pascal Aufranc Chenas Gamay Noir 4-pack offer

$21/bottle             $75/4-pack

This Gamay hides how serious it is with its sheer deliciousness. It turns out this is even true as a lightly chilled wine as we head into warmer Spring days. Pascal has grown his very small vineyard holdings into a still very humble estate with vines planted in excellent sites in a few Cru appellations. This one is from a single vineyard planted in 1939 in grantic soils of the Chénas Cru brings depth and lots of red and black fruit. Cherries, plump raspberries, Red Vines candy, prickly ash and herb-spice.

Pair it with: Tapas. Proper Greek Gyros. Naan bread. Burgers. The Roti and dipping curry from Hat Yai. Flautas. Beef hot dogs. Almost anything covered in Dijon cream sauce. Carbonara. Chile con carne (or without the carne). Pizza.

Two Bottles Worthy of a Little Extra Attention
Beyond the curated packs we offer each month, there are the occasional single bottles that we’re particularly fond of. Fleeting, and limited in availability, here are two that will be available for a moment.

Weingut Edgar Brutler, Grünspitz, Crisana (Transylvania) Romania 2019

  • $31.50/bottle
  • Style: Dry white wine
  • Grape Varieties: Grünspitz
  • Appellation: Crisana (Transylvania)
  • Bottle Size: 750mL

A deceptively simple and rustic white wine for only an instant; that first taste. Delicious. But there is so much more to discover here.

We call our style “old-school-avantgarde” — Edgar Brutler

Apart from a small vineyard they left at the first project, their 12 year old 0.8 hectare vineyard is the only other vineyard of Grünspitz in the world. It was once grown in the field blends of the area, but it was Edgar’s grandfather that decided to bring it back to life. The grape is late ripening, small berried, and has thick skins. Bottled after 15 months in stainless steel with zero additions, it’s rustic at first, but opens up into one of the more unique whites we’ve come across.

Domaine le Roc Des Anges, “Australe,” Côtes Catalanes, France 2018

  • $42/bottle
  • Style: Dry red wine
  • Grape Varieties: Serine
  • Appellation: Côtes Catalanes
  • Bottle Size: 750mL

A relative of Syrah, whose name means the serene one, this is a gorgeously powerful and immediately delicious red wine. From grape vine cuttings taken from Saint Joseph, husband and wife team Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet, spent 14 years waiting for their vineyard to come into full production. If this bottle is any measure, it was well worth the wait! Ripe dark fruit, smoke, herbs and savory spices.
