Like many of you, we are too trying to make sense of the rapidly changing world that seems to be giving us new anxieties, worries and uncertainties each and every day. It’s a pretty scary time for us all, but one thing is for sure, we will endure, our values and culture will survive, and we will once again come together to share and celebrate life and a glass of wine.
Thank goodness for wine! – perhaps history’s greatest and oldest instrument of socialization. It’s really helping us get through right now even while we are apart (have you all Zoom or House Party happy-houred with your friends and family yet? It’s pretty great!!)
This month we would typically be announcing our Spring travel dates. We would be planning on visiting our customers far and wide and holding events in each city, bringing us together to share a few bottles + details of our upcoming 10th anniversary special release wines and tastings. That’s all on a bit of a hold for now, but staying home will bring us back together sooner and stronger.
Despite the pause we are all experiencing, we feel it’s the right thing to move forward with our annual Spring release, featuring some of our most beloved wines, including our Division-Villages wines, along with a few single site and special treats!
As we ship most of these wines directly to you, this is the safest way we can share our wines (and do what we can to keep our business afloat.) Check them out below – we can’t wait for you to try them!
Offering each of you continued virtual cheers and looking forward to brighter days and the moment we can all revel together again.
IT’S TIME FOR NEW WINES, OH AND ROLLING PAPERS TOO!
This Spring, we’ve put together what we believe to be a solid roster of wines to rock out to and binge watch Netflix while caged up at home (do yourself a favor and watch Tiger King – pairs well with our new carbonic Pinot Noir.) We also got into the rolling paper “business,” to help you pass the time in style… just sayin’ (add one free to your wine order here).
Also, please remember we are offering included (free) FedEx ground shipping on orders of 3+ bottles until April 30th with the code “SHIPSHIPSHIP”, this includes all wine club shipments for the Spring release.
Read on below for our synopsis of the release, or skip to bottom to get straight to the wines!
Starting with Division-Villages wines: In 2019 we experienced a year of milder weather, giving us lots of nostalgic feels! We all might be getting used to year after year of sunny weather ranging from pleasantly warm to raging hot, where the grapes ripen (sometimes too) easily and the hardest part of our job is to best ensure balance of ripeness to acid and structure – but this was not one of those years! It took us back to some of our earlier vintages while learning in France and tasting bottlings from the cool 2002 and 2007 seasons, where tension and energy shone in wines made from grapes that had also reached perfect ripeness just before the growing season’s end.
The 2019 growing season and its wines are providing us this magical balance with ease for what we feel is the first time since 2010. With 10 years of experience as wine growers it is wonderful to look back through our catalogue, and to now add this year with not only its energy and harmony, but also its new lens to look through onto some familiar wines.
This Spring will also see the debut of a few of our finest efforts that either have stood out just a bit more to us, or are a bottlings we only make in exactly the right conditions: Returning after a year hiatus will be the 2018 Division Wine Co. Crémant de Portland, made from old vine Chenin Blanc with just a splash of Gamay. The wine is nervy, creamy with perfect small bubbles. Also from our Loire-ish repertoire is a new bottlings of our Division Malbec “Côt” Serra Vineyard-Applegate Valley – this 2018 vintage is bursting with floral and earthy energy.
We hoped that something special would take hold when we grafted a row of our section of Dijon clone Chardonnay at the Biodynamic farmed Johan Vineyards over to old Draper Chardonnay clonal selection in 2016. The Draper selection cuttings in question (said to originally have been suit-cased from Meursault in mid-60s, and then famously having made their way north from Cali onto Eyrie’s Original Block in the early 70s) came from our old vines at Stangland Vineyard that unfortunately succumbed to Phylloxera. The new 2018 Division Chardonnay “Trois” Johan Vineyards- Van Duzer, which is almost entirely made up of our first year of fruit from the Draper Chardonnay grafts, has simply floored us! We think the wine speaks for itself and can’t wait to hear your feedback.
Last but not least is our final bottling release from the 2017 vintage – and it is also our finest wine from one of the mercurial growing seasons of the past few decades. Temperance Hill Vineyard near the crest of the Eola Amity Hills does what it always does, and beats to its own drum – the Pinot noir always takes its time, and can be maybe a bit ornery in its youth, but the wines grow up to be nothing short of special, and this year is no different. The drinking window has just started to open up for the 2017 “Trois” Pinot and we highly encourage you to take advantage of it!
