Carioca Bowls Sets Up Heated Tents at Its Two Cafes for Year-Round Outdoor Dining, Adds Warm and Savory Brazilian Specialities
PORTLAND, Ore.—Oct. 28, 2020—Carioca Bowls, a Brazilian-inspired cafe that embraces the vibrant ambiance of Rio de Janeiro, has prepared for the fall and winter seasons by setting up a number of 10×20 fully-enclosed tents with windows and heaters at its two Portland locations: 827 NE Alberta St. and 1645 NW 21st Ave. Both cafes now offer plenty of warm, tropical, socially-distanced indoor seating alongside comfortable outdoor seating at its courtyards.
“While our take out business is strong, we are hoping that the addition of heated and tented outdoor seating will bring in more business during the traditionally slower late fall and winter months,” said Richard Matusow, Carioca Bowls co-owner and CEO. “We’re also excited to bring back some of our popular warm and savory Brazilian specialties that are perfect for cooler weather.”
Carioca Bowls has relaunched its Samba Bowl, a vegan riff on a famous Brazilian stew called feijoada. The Samba Bowl features black beans stewed with zucchini, roasted poblanos, sauteed onions, and garlic, served on a bed of rice and topped with steamed kale, cabbage, and farofa—gluten-free toasted manioc root. The Samba Bowl pairs well with Carioca Bowls’ homemade Pão de Queijo, Brazilian cheese breads that come in vegan and vegetarian varieties, and also complements the cafe’s signature craft açaí bowls. Another warm option for fall includes Carioca Bowls’ hearty Amazon oatmeal bowl, which features an açaí blend with two custom toppings served over a bed of warm, gluten-free blueberry and chia oatmeal with slices of fresh banana and a scoop of crunchy granola.
Carioca Bowls co-owners Matusow and Matthew Lau met while working at Sambazon, the world’s premier açaí supplier. The two started Carioca Bowls in 2015 with the mission of creating the ultimate ambiance to raise the bar with unique açaí blends and complementary Brazilian specialties. They opened their first cafe on Alberta Street in 2015, offering the quintessential açaí sensory experience: warm, vivid colors, tropicalia music, and delicious Brazililan specialties served in an inspired tropical setting. They followed with a second location in the fall of 2019 in the Slabtown neighborhood. Both locations offer “build your own” açaí bowls with a choice of base blend and more than 50 toppings; all bowls come with gluten-free granola and sliced banana. The cafes also serve vegan-inspired feijoada, Pão de Queijo, avocado toast, and a number of hot and cold beverages.
Carioca Bowls offers take-out and sit-down dining with social distancing inside and out. Carioca Bowls’ Alberta Street Cafe is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The Slabtown location is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily (closed Tuesdays).
