Carioca Bowls Introduces Refresher Açaí Blend
A cooling blend of açaí, watermelon, basil, and strawberry comprises the base of the summer meal
“People are looking for ways to get meals right now that aren’t heavy or hot all the time,” explained Matthew Lau, Carioca Bowls co-owner. “Açaí is a whole food that makes a healthy, satisfying meal that’s both grounding and energizing, as well as delicious and refreshing.”
Added co-owner Richard Matusow, “We’re always looking to raise the bar and innovate with açaí, so we’re really excited about this latest creation that highlights the refreshing qualities of watermelon. The basil adds another dimension to the blend that complements the other ingredients in a unique and refreshing way.”
Matusow and Lau opened their first Carioca Bowls at 827 NE Alberta Street in 2015, offering the quintessential açaí sensory experience: warm, vivid colors, tropicalia tunes, and delicious açaí meals served in an inspired tropical setting that transports the senses. They opened their second location in the fall of 2019 at 1645 NW 21st Avenue in the Slabtown neighborhood. Both locations offer signature açaí bowls and a “build your own” menu with a choice of base blend and more than 50 toppings; all bowls come with gluten-free granola and banana. The cafes also serve homemade Pão de Queijo – a Brazilian cheese bread – and a selection of other options including oatmeal, avocado toast, and toast with JEM nut butters.
Both Carioca Bowl locations remain open during the pandemic, offering take-out and sit-down dining with social distancing inside and out. Carioca Bowls Alberta Street cafe is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and features a verdant side garden filled with plenty of seating, sails for shade, and lush tropical foliage. The Slabtown location is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays (closed Tuesdays) and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends and offers a tropical courtyard patio as an urban oasis.
Said Matusow, “When it comes to açaí, like everything else, there’s craft and there’s mass. Carioca Bowls is taking the craft flag and planting it, elevating açaí here in the city. Portland has its craft coffee, craft beer and craft donuts; here at Carioca Bowls, we’re creating a destination for craft açaí.”
