The first release in the distillery’s Pinot Noir Barrel-Finishing series is available Father’s Day Weekend.
Portland, OR (June 6, 2017)—Bull Run Distillery is thrilled to announce the release of its Oregon Pinot Noir Finished American Whiskey, the first in a series of barrel finishing projects from the whiskey-centric distillery in Portland, Oregon. The Pinot Noir Barrel Finishing series honors Oregon’s iconic grape and celebrates the barrel, a tool that has become a jumping off point for collaborations across the beverage industry.
“I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the barrel—how many lives it can have and how many different industries it can touch,” says Bull Run Distillery founder/distiller Lee Medoff. “With our finishing projects, we hope to highlight how the barrel can add a completely new dynamic to the spirit and coax out both distinct and beautiful flavors,” he adds.
For his finishing experiments, Medoff uses the barrel as a tool to enhance the base spirit while honoring the ingredient previously held in the barrel. “I wanted to start with used French Oak Pinot Noir barrels because they would impart those fruity notes so characteristic of Oregon Pinot Noir,” says Medoff. When compared to New American Oak, French Oak has softer characteristics with more coffee and chocolate in the toast. “That brings in vanilla notes and adds layer of delicate complexity when finishing our American Whiskey.”
Bull Run Distillery’s American Whiskey, one of their most popular products and one of the distillery’s first releases, is aged 10 years in used bourbon barrels. For this barrel-finishing project, Medoff transfers the American Whiskey into used Oregon Pinot Noir French Oak barrels from Brooks Winery where it spends over a year in barrel and lives through four different seasons—an important detail because the barrel expands and contracts with the seasons, imparting new flavors.
Bull Run’s Oregon Pinot Noir Finished American Whiskey will be released Father’s Day weekend at the distillery, and is available for $34.95 (750ml, 100 proof) in Oregon. It will soon be released in Washington, Massachusetts, Illinois and New York, and available nationally at Ezras.com.
As for other barrel finishing projects, Bull Run Distillery will soon release Pinot Noir Barrel Finishing expressions of their Oregon Single Malt Whiskey, Aquavit, Medoyeff Starka and Bourbon. Medoff is especially excited to release its Oregon Single Malt aged in Oregon Oak Barrels, an “all Oregon” project exploring the region’s distinct terroir as it relates to whiskey. The distillery is also experimenting with cognac, madeira, vermouth and other used barrels for upcoming special finishing project releases.
