Andy’s Wine Pairings

Add a bottle (or two) of handpicked wines from our wine director to your Bird Box meal. Did you know Canard is up for a James Beard award this year for Outstanding Wine Program?

Táganan Blanco, 2018, Tenerife, Canary Islands…$38
The word Táganan means “slope” in the native Canary Island dialect, and is also the name of the sub-region of Tenerife where this wine comes from. It is a field blend of lesser-planted local varieties like Albillo Criollo, Marmajuelo, Gual, Malvasia..and others some of which are unidentified. The northern coast of Tenerife where these wines grow is cooler than other parts of the Island which allows the grapes to slowly mature, maintaining acidity and keeping alcohol levels balanced. The grapes are all co-fermented and aged in neutral barrels for without any sulfur additions. The wine smells of pears, salted almonds, and has a slight smoky note.

Valdeorras, (Mencia) Gaba do Xil, Ladeiras do Xil, 2016, Galicia….$35
Ladieras do Xil is a project founded by Telmo Rodriguez who is one of Spain’s most respected winemakers (his family also owns Remelluri in Rioja). Valdeorras is directly east of Ribeira Sacra and directly south of Bierzo.  Gaba do Xil is named for the hillsides of the Sil River, which is the lifeblood of the region.   The grapes are mostly Menica with a splash of Merenzao,  from vines that are between 40 and 80 years old.  This wine is produced from certified organic grapes and is fermented and aged in stainless steel for 12 mos. The wine exhibits red fruit, is floral and perfumed, and shows refinement and elegance with a hint of forest floor and perhaps bay leaf.
