I have some exciting news to share from Chef BJ Smith! On March 24th, Smith will close his Vancouver, WA restaurant, Smokehouse Provisions, to make room for something new (well… new to the PNW). Smith plans to reopen Smitty’s Original Coney Island, a hot dog and sandwich-focused restaurant and bar once owned by his parents in South Bend, Indiana during his youth.
Smith’s own version of Smitty’s Original Coney Island, taking over the Smokehouse Provisions space, will open to the public on April 1st.
The change comes on the heels of his most recent opening of Delores, an homage to his mother who unexpectedly passed away at the end of 2017. With his mother’s passing and the opening of Delores, Smith has felt more connected to his childhood than ever before, using these memories as inspiration for his new projects. He’s recently discovered all of his mom’s original recipes from when she cooked at Smitty’s, including the original Coney Dog recipe that she purchased (for $13,000!) from the original owner who opened Smitty’s in the 1950’s.
Guests of Smitty’s Original Coney Island will find a variety of Coney Island-style hot dogs, burgers, fish and chicken sandwiches, and more. Dogs will cost $3 each with burgers and sandwiches around $7. The bar menu will be fun and playful and will feature big, colorful old-school cocktails, beers, and more. There will also be a daily happy hour from 3pm-5pm (including weekends) and weekly specials such as Prime Rib night.
Smith is focused on making this new concept exceptionally family-friendly, both in the menu and the design of the space and is planning a complete remodel. The current Provision’s private dining room will be transformed into a large arcade and will feature old school classics like Skee Ball, Big Buck Hunter, car racing games, and more. The garage doors in the arcade will have the ability to open up to the outside in the warmer month, providing families a fun and open place to play while they eat and drink!
Smitty’s Original Coney Island will also have several TVs making this a very sports-friendly place giving guests their pick of games to watch.
