My partner and I recently enjoyed our honeymoon in Oaxaca, Mexico. (Yes, to the person that called me out for being engaged for seemingly too long we did, finally, get married 😅) The food was amazing, the people so sweet and welcoming, and the sites grand and majestic. What stood out to me most, however, was a little factory called Jacobo & María Ángeles that created insanely detailed figurines called alebrijes. Alebrijes have existed since the mid-1900’s and became more widespread after being popularized by the Disney movie Coco. It’s as common to see an alebrije for sale at a market in Oaxaca as it is to see a shot glass or postcard. What sets the figurines from Jacobo & María Ángeles apart is that they are carved from one piece of wood and are painted with an incredible amount of detail.

Other than the alebrijes, highlights from our trip was photographing Mallory all over town and setting baby turtles free into the ocean.

It’s been over a month since I was warming my toes in the white sand of Mexico and I’m happy to be back, improving on the craft I love each and every day.

The Portland skies seem to be confused that it is June and not April, but flowers are blooming and tank top days will soon be among us. We’re inspired by the hard work of our local farmers that continue to surprise us with what is possible to grow in Portland and we look forward to the fruits and veggies the little extra sun will bring.

Tickets for July are now available through Tock.

Our current menu:

bánh tráng nướng
bánh xèo
durian, strawberry, tomato
squid and elderflower
veal and garlic
alaskan halibut
bánh bò nướng and caviar
bánh da lợn

We’re incredibly grateful for your support and the many congratulatory messages received. We look forward to having you enjoy the final moments of spring and first days of summer with us.

xoxo,
V
