Portland Chefs Proving Food is Love
Four of Portland’s top chefs come together to support Oregon’s only tuition-free private middle school for low-income youth. The event is the school’s 5th annual Harvesting Success Dinner on November 3, 2018. It celebrates the successes of its middle school students and graduates and raises funds for the school year. Chefs Sarah Schafer of Irving St. Kitchen, Rick Gencarelli of Grassa and Lardo, Matt Sigler of Il Solito, and James Layton of Southland Whiskey Kitchen have collaborated to create an incredible four-course, family style meal for 400. Local businesses, like Pacific Coast Fruit Co., Nicky’s Meats, and Sheridan Fruit Co. come together to donate products for the chefs to cook with.
James Layton explains why he volunteers his time to cook for the event. “We are extremely happy and proud to be able to contribute to Nativity School, especially in this way which allows us to do what we do best, cooking and service! The time and effort that the School puts into each student from the time they attend until well into adulthood is beyond comparison in today’s educational system. Giving students from diverse and difficult backgrounds a chance at success is an exciting endeavor to be able to support.”
