A Look Back at the Historic Vintage
Today we take a look back at the historic 1997 vintage, with a focus one of Italy’s most famous zonas : Brunello di Montalcino. For the American Press it was “the vintage of the century,” carrying marks in the high nineties from the likes of Parker, Tanzer, and Wine Spectator. For us it was a text book, crowd pleasing year that generally produced approachable, ripe, rich, opulent wines yet have the stuffing to age. These wines are beginning to show their personality now, and this is an excellent opportunity to taste the collectible gems of ’97. This will be a sit-down tasting featuring seven of our favorite Brunellos.
1997 BARBI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO Fattoria dei Barbi has created a lovely 1997. The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits power and grace. The quality of the fruit is evident and the bouquet opens to dark cherry, pressed rose, cola, balsam herb and spicy tobacco. Those aromas faithfully underline the best qualities to be found in aged Sangiovese. At the back, the wine shows firm, but finely textured tannins and a bright vein of crisp acidity.
1997 CAPPANNA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA
“This shows amazing aromas of dried and fresh spices, a well as ripe fruits. Full-bodied, with firm and very reserved tannins, yet it’s powerful and dense. Best after 2006.” K&L’s notes – 1,250 cases produced. Inviting and seductive. Warm fruits flow from the glass; they seem to thicken the very air! The wine is dark and dense with concentrated fruit. Thick and muscular, broad on the palate with leather, green tea, spice, warm plumy fruit and soft melting chocolate plus a powerful, linear structure underlies the fleshy exterior of the wine. One of my favorites wines of the vintage. Capanna sits just north of Montalcino up the hill from Montosoli and west of Valdicava’s Madonna del Piano vineyard in a Cretaceous clay and silt soil called Galestro.
1997 IL CASTELLARE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
The terrific 1997 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a staggering aromatic profile of soy sauce, roasted meats, dried herbs, jammy black and red fruits, and Asian spices. This full-bodied, superbly concentrated, layered, multidimensional Brunello is the kind of wine one expects from such a renowned region, but so rarely receives. This beauty should drink well young yet evolve effortlessly for 15+ years. –
1997 BANFI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
Very dark garnet with saturated purple hues. Penetrating aromas of underbrush, sweet tobacco and wild mushroom. Quite juicy, but also sumptuous and deep, with rich flavors of mocha, espresso and anise over a firm mineral backbone. There is no evidence of excess weight in spite of the wine generous structure. The long close features glossy tannins and a flavor of cassis. At once powerful and elegant. Among the largest producers in Montalcino, Castello Banfi is arguably the one making the best Brunellos today, with a remarkable string of successes since 1990. 97 Points – Tanzer.
1997 PIAN DELLE VIGNE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
Very rich and plummy, with lots of mineral and floral undertones. Full, fresh and very powerful, with big, yet silky tannins and a long aftertaste of cherry and spices. Very, very long. Still needs time.–1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2009. 97 Points – Wine Spectator.
1997 MARTINOZZI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
A miniscule property in the heart of the Montalcino zone. Imported directly into Portland.
1997 SAN FILIPPO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
Opaque, almost inky garnet with a purple core. Exotic nose of clove, cinnamon and cocoa. Very sweet, dense and fresh on the palate, with blackberry jam, ripe plum, chocolate, mint and vanilla in evidence. Generously structured and quite opulent, with ripe polished tannins and a cassis-laden finish of great warmth and persistence. Succulent and compelling; a great wine. 97 Points – Tanzer.
