Summer just got a whole lot better with a decadent combination of fresh xurros and ice cream. Soon to be everyone’s favorite summer treat, these xurro ice cream sandwiches are handmade before your eyes. Beginning with hand rolled dough, the xurro is made to order, tossed warm with cinnamon and sugar, then assembled with your choice of ice cream. Choose your own xurro adventure, selecting from two housemade ice cream flavors, Vanilla and Cocanú Chocolate, or a rotating ice cream pop-up flavor. 180 makes their own ice creams in house, available any day of the week, perfect companion for a xurro, enjoyed in an affogato, or in a xurro ice cream sandwich. Visit during 180’s Ice Cream Pop Up Series this August to mix and match, making your own xurro creation using Salt & Straw Ice Cream’s featured four flavors including Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Freckled Woodblock Chocolate, Coava Coffee & Cocanú Craque, and Roasted Strawberry Coconut (v). Although Americans may be familiar with the churro they get every year at the local county fair, it doesn’t compare to authentic xurros ( chu rō) from Spain. Originally dreamed up by husband and wife team José Chesa and Cristina Baéz, long time friend David Martin joined forces with the couple to bring 180, Portland’s first xurreria, in order to share the traditional and beloved Spanish xurros. José and David were raised eating these scrumptious treats in Spain and are eager to transport those young and young at heart to the streets of their youth, where they can watch xurros made to order and fried at 180 degrees celsius (hence the name) through large windows in the open kitchen space. The menu features plain, sugar & cinnamon, chocolate covered, or filled xurros, expertly paired with hot chocolate supplied by Cocanú and coffee from Local Roasting Company.
