Washington Co Farmer’s Markets 2nd Annual Food Drive

WASHINGTON COUNTY FARMER’S MARKETS

2ND ANNUAL “BUY A BUNCH FOR THE HUNGRY”

SUMMER FOOD DRIVE

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2012

CITY PARK

SW 5TH & HALL

(BETWEEN THE FOUNTAIN AND THE BEAVERTON FARMERS MARKET)

July 26, 2012 – On Saturday, August 11 come see what more than 60 neighborhood partners are doing to make your collective vision a reality! The award-winning Beaverton Community Vision is a citywide project designed to guide community oriented decisions.  Celebrate a day of activities and fun as they team up with the Beaverton Farmer’s Market for their 2nd Annual Food Drive! The food drive will benefit the Tualatin Valley Gleaners, a supplemental food program designed to provide food, aid and other assistance to the low income and disabled individuals in the Tualatin Valley area.

Family-friendly games and activities will be held at City Park from 10 am — 2 pm. To contribute to the Washington County Farmer’s Market summer food drive, please bring canned food or purchase fresh produce from the vendors. Donations will be distributed to families in Washington County by the Tualatin Valley Gleaners. We will happily accept the following items:

•             fresh fruits and vegetables from the market

•             canned, bagged or boxed food

•             pet food

•             personal supplies (deodorant, diapers, shampoo)

•             condiments (mayo, ketchup, soy sauce, syrup)

•             protein foods (canned tuna, chicken and other meats)

Last year our donations amounted to $1273.50 worth of market tokens and cash. We filled over 15 boxes of fresh produce, totaling 278 lbs., and over 33 boxes of shelf stable and personal items, totaling 760lbs. We were able to supply 203 families with 1037 lbs. of food and product!

Oregon is ranked second in hunger by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In Washington County alone, approximately 40,000 children are living at or below 185% of poverty level, and in 2009 about 51,350 people received SNAP (formally known as food stamps) each month. By attending the Beaverton Community Vision Celebration, you can offer support to this underprivileged community and help to make their lives healthier and brighter.
