Top Portland Chefs to Battle for Ice Cream Supremacy Competitors Will Hand Churn Original Creations in Front of Live Audience

WHAT:

Celebrate National Ice Cream Month with the Dairy Farmers of Oregon 2012 Ice Cream Churn-a-ment Friday, July 13, atPortland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square.

An all-star group of local chefs will demonstrate ice cream recipes developed to capture the taste of summer in Oregon using old-fashioned hand crank churns while they race to completion. A panel of celebrity judges will select the ice cream that best captures whatsummer tastes like in Oregon. An award will also be given to the fastest churner.

The Ice Cream Churn-a-ment is free and open to the public. Ice cream lovers of all ages are invited to sample some of the 22 million gallons of ice cream produced in Oregon every year. Umpqua Dairy and Sunshine Dairy Foods will providefree ice cream samples, and New Seasons Market will prepare free milk shake samples, while supplies last.

The winners from 2011’s Churn-a-ment in the Speed and Taste categories will be on hand to help judge at this year’s event – Sean Sasser from Urban Farmer and Megan Vargas from Andina. Kristen Kaste, Oregon’s Dairy Princess Ambassador, also will be on hand to judge. Portland’s own Daria O’Neill, afternoon host on 105.1 the Buzz (KRSK-FM) will emcee this year’s family-friendly event.
